Most people suggest keyword density as 3%.
What does this exactly mean?
Does it mean I should use at most three different keywords in 100 words or
I should repeat one of my keywords at most three times in 100 words?

sorry if my question is complicated. I couldn't find a better way to explain it.

Usually when it comes to density people are talking about the main - primary keyword of your content. For example, if you have 500 word article, and you use your primary keyword 5 times throughout the article, your density will be - 5/500x100% = 1%.

I suggest you use your primary keyword at least one time in each 80 words, and you will be fine with density.

I hope this helps a bit.

    I actually think that 3% is too much :-) I aim for 2% :-)

I set my easy wp seo plugin to "score" in a density range of 2% - 2.75% and it seems to be getting great results

Thanks for your answer. does that mean I can use other keywords besides my main keyword? If so how many different keywords should I use at most per article?

I am targeting 3 keywords per article. Some people are targeting more than this but I am targeting three. You can repeate these three article as per article requirement. I feel that it is enough and I must say I am getting good help for my ranking in search engine.

Keyword density just refers to how many times you main keyword phrase shows up in your articles. It should show up about 1 time for every 100 words. For me, this equates to a paragraph. 3% is rather high and looks spammy like you're stuffing keywords. When you write, you want to it to come across as natural as possible. In addition to using your main keyword, you also want to use variations of it.

I usually go for about 2% which means twice every hundred words. It's important to remember that Google is all about their user experience as well. You should focus on writing highly informative articles and if it is blatantly keyword stuffed it's highly unlikely to be ranked.

"Ezine Articles" are good judges of this. They decide everything according to what their paymaster, Google, wants.

On their site, if you submit anything with keyword density that touches 2% or above, it rightly gets you an automated rejection by the software, without even getting as far as a human editor.

But that's a "maximum", not something to aim for.

People who write for readers, rather than for search engines, tend to do much better, in article marketing, anyway.

No, it refers to "each keyword", not to "any keyword", but your 3% figure is much too high.

If you take it as a much more reasonable and realistic 1%, then it means you can mention each keyword once in every 100 words, on average.

If you take it as 2% (still too high for many people!), then it means you can mention each keyword twice in every 100 words, on average.

Not at all ... it is complicated (as can be seen from all the misunderstandings in other conversations here on this subject), and you expressed it well.

Due to web spamming, keyword density is affected. It only allows two keywords per article. If you're a writer, just write anything and don't focus too much on keyword density. But if they focus on it , they tend to write content which people would not be interested in reading or linking at. You can use a free keyword density tool to help you uncover a lot of opportunities.

2% to me is more than sufficient

when you start getting to 3 - 5% you run the risk of being penalized IMO and this kw density is not natural

10 % forget it, you will be severely penalized and the writing is not for humans
