Explain the press release thing to me

Never really tried a press release as part of my SEO before, not entirely sure how it works or what the benefits are.

Is a press release something you should do on a regular basis, say once a month? Is there anything in particular you should write in them? is there a format?

I'm keen to ad them to my SEO routine, just not sure what to d or how to go about it exactly.

    That should give you a solid idea of what you want to know. Just remember, press releases are news announcements about your business, products, events, or personnel. Don't write for the sake of getting a backlink. Write them with the idea of trying to get distribution of your announcement. Why is it news?

    Yup, pretty much correct.

    Don't get too caught up with the SEO benefits though - in that case, it isn't really a press release - just an article.

    A press release should always get out to real media, without just focussing on online distribution. I've been in the game for 10+ years, so know my stuff!

    No, I will not encourage you on this. Press release distribution is passe... I don’t do it. Plus, when there are better alternatives (blog posting, blog commenting, social networking...) available, why do you want to stick with the less effective ones?

    One of the biggest benefits of a press release that gets published is the simple fact that it send out a lot of targeted traffic to your blog. People read your press release and if they want more info, they can click on your link (make sure add a link in your press release) and visit your blog for more information.
