Be Careful When Commenting On Sites For Backlinks...

...I learned the hard way last week. I enroll in Google Alerts to receive relevant updates about content, sites, articles, stories etc. that I can comment on to get link juice back to my site plus potential traffic.

One online publication took my comment and their system automatically put it in their sidebar under "Most Recent Comments" and thus it appeared on nearly 2,000 pages. And overnight I was sent to the "box" or whatever by Google, even though I was employing zero blackhag tactics.

Anyway, just be cognizant of such widgets if you're trying to start a new, small site that cannot quite handle the links.

I'd worry more about the other comments on the site than the fact the sidebar appeared on all the pages. Was the comment section effectively a link farm full of spam links? I would think would be more likely to raise a flag with google than the fact that the sidebar appears on all pages.

I am thinking the same thing as you,it could be a sidebar of the recent spam comments

If I mention how disappointed the elderly, unsightly witch population of at least one continent may be about that, is the comment going to cause a fracas or offend anyone over its potential sexist/racist connotations ... or can I just about get away with it? :p

Yep, "blackhag tactics" [sic] will always come back to haunt you.

I very much doubt it was because of the sitewide sidebar.

    +1

Doubt it has anything to do with being listed in the sidebar. There's probably another reason.

Links of recent post in the sidebar is how blogs work. G loves blogs. Take a deep breath and look elsewhere for the issue.

I laughed harder than I should have at this. Darn you marketing nerds!

I also doubt this is the reason for the sandbox. I would guess that the amount of links made Google look closer at your site.

I had a similar thing happen to my brand new site. 4000+ back links to my homepage, and I have received no penalties.

No worries. Happens all the time. There's a lot of blogs with a "Recent Comments" sidebar enabled.

Even if you were placed in the sandbox, if you keep building links l, you will start to climb again.

"TAKE ACTION" is the first thing everyone tells you and then they leave it at that. I'll add a second part: TRACK EVERYTHING" - It's the only way to ensure your ACTION leads to results.
