How to estimate revenue from an affiliate site ? Is this right ?

Hi warriors,
I am trying to estimate possible revenue from a quite vague travel related search along the lines of the search phrase "holiday weather in..." hoping thats going to lead to some clicks to a travel agent or adsense.

It is low competition and I can buy an exact match domain.

Google keyword tool is showing around 5000 searches a month for phrases i reckon i can rank for.

So if i was first am i going to get 40 percent of those searchers to my site ?(2000)
If so am I likely to get say 1 or 2 percent clicking the ads ?
(20 to 40)

So am i likely to get say 50pence per click from a holiday company ?
Hence £10 to 20 a month ?

Look at the PPC value in the Google Adwords Keyword Tool for your keywords. Take 20 - 30% of the value shown there. That's what you might get per click if there are enough advertisers.

You can check the number of advertisers with Spyfu.com

Also, write one of the articles you are trying to rank, put adsense on it, visit the URL, wait a day and see if you now have Adsense Ads related to your content. If not, your CTR will probably be bad. You need to adjust your article to generate more relevant ads in that case.

  Thanks for that, can't advertisers choose to stalk users with their ads that the searcher has previously viewed?, hence making it irrelevant what subject my site is about ?

Yes, but your CTR will be bad nonetheless. If you have targeted ads relevant to what the visitor was searching for you can achieve ad CTRs in the lower double digits, i.e. something in between 10% and 30%. If you only have untargeted ads and the odd stalker ad (I like that term ) your CTR will be somewhere in the 1-4% range.

Nope, not likely. The overall average CTR for position #1 is about 23% (not 40%). You generally see higher CTR on branded searches and lower CTRs on generic searches. Since you are targeting generic searches you should use something like 10-15% CTR for a position #1 listing, that would be more realistic.
