Can't Get The Dot Com Domain Name You Want? Add A Digit

The wisdom with domain names goes that a dot com extension is better that any other, dot info etc.

And if you can't get the dot com domain name you want, and you can't or don't want to fill it with dashes (opinion seems divided on the impact of dashes in domain names), doesn't it make sense - like with taken email addresses - to add a digit at the end?

For example, if internetmarketing.com is taken, register internetmarketing2.com

This isn't talked about much and I've seen some adult industry sites doing it.

I'd love to hear what the black belt SEO gurus here think - I honestly don't know the answer but it seems like a valid workaround.

    That's a good idea, Terry. Google gives nice boost to exactly matching domains, and one digit will diminish that boost only slightly.

      As far as the debate about weather or not to use dashes goes, I have used domains with dashes between the words for years and have really seen no difference whatsoever in the way they get ranked.

    it is really useful using your creativity looking for possible domain names. There are also some websites where you can check the availability of those you are looking for. Otherwise, there are some companies doing it for you of course not for free but offering great results

    I would prefer adding a small word such as "my" in front of the keywords or something along those lines. Something about the number that doesn't sit that well with me.

    To me i always like to just simply add the word "about" "my" learn, love, know, and like to the doamin name.

    Personally, I don't do that. I always use Yahoo! Domains: Secure Domain Name Registration to search for my domain. If the domain I search is taken, it will always show suggestion of relevant domain.

    IMHO having a number in the domain name is not a great idea. It may confuse your visitors.

    For Example, you own internetmarketing2.com

    You go to a seminar and someone asks about your website, you tell people your that your web address is internetmarketing2.com. This may confuse a lot of people and they end up like visiting internetmarketingtwo.com instead of internetmarketing2.com. This may lead to a possible loss of traffic/sales.

    So, I dont think its a good idea. Instead of adding numbers you can add some kind of suffix or prefix to make your site a lot more brandable.

      That's the way I see it, too. From the SEO side, internetmarketing2.com is totally fine, but if you want people to remember it, it's bad. So, if you are using it for an affiliate site that just sends people elsewhere anyway, go for it...if you want it as a personal site, blog or company site, pick something more "unique" and less generic.

    I don't think it matters. My site is traffic101.org, and I still have a PR 2 ranking. And yes I did add numbers too it. I think any .dot is okay, as long as you are happy with it and busy promoting.
