Hi all,

I am puzzled with one of my websites. I started the website back in July this year. Ordered original content with minimum 500 words. I have now more then 50 articles. Use clickbump theme for WP. Use all the SEO plugins I can think of.

I started to build backlinks with BMR after 3 months. Used RSS submission and forum profiles and some other back linking techniques. I link all the post to each other with different anchor text.

In webmaster tools I can see 900 back links in Google. Main page is PR 1 and some inner pages are PR2 or 3. Alexa ranking is around 1M.

I only get like 3 or 4 visitors a day. With 900 back-links i expected more traffic and higher ranking. Is it possible that I build the back links to quick?

Or maybe I am in the wrong industry with to much competition? By the way I am in the travel insurance industry.

If some some body want to have a look at the website and can do a SEO review pm me.

Thanks for any advice?

Are you ranked in Google for any keywords that receive good amounts of traffic? Did you make sure that you were using the "Exact" search results during your keyword research and not "Broad"? That's often the biggest mistake people make.

And the number of (quality) backlinks you need will depend entirely on your competition. If you have 50 pages of content and almost no traffic, then either your competition is really strong, or your target keywords don't receive any traffic.

Competition is very strong in the travel insurance industry but with 50 articles you should be getting long tail traffic at the least. Something must be going on with your site if you are only getting a few uniques a day.

I'm on my phone right now or I'd offer to review it but it looks like you're doing things right outside of the site. Especially since you have high PR pages.

Without knowing your site/keywords, it'll be hard to judge where the bottleneck is. If I had to guess, it's either super high competition keywords or poor on-page SEO.

Hi Chris, you have done a great job with your site. It looks terrific and has good content. That's the good news.

I don't think your problem lies in backlinks or site promotion. The real issue as I see it is that your primary keyword phrase, "Travel Insurance for UK" is just not a popular search term.

According to Google's adwords keywords tool, this search phrase gets 260 searches IN TOTAL per month (Exact match, never use "Broad"). That means if you are in #1 spot and getting ALL of the clicks on this search, you are just getting 8 visits a day.

You need to be targeting niches that get a minimum of 1000 exact match searches per month. That's the LEAST number of searches you should consider before launching a website on a niche. Otherwise, you are building a product where there is no pent up demand.

    Bottom Line:
Choose niches where there is robust and healthy demand with beatable competition.

I have learned from this project and can see that there is to much competition and not enough searches for the main keyword.

Not sure if I need to spend anymore time on this project. Did spend already a lot of hours and money. Maybe i need to leave as it is and hope that domain age will help me with some traffic.

I started some other niche websites. Thank you Scott for your advice. I am using your clickbump themes and they are great. For one of my other websites I have a CTR of almost 20%. Traffic volume is not very high but I know that the templates work.

Thanks for the kind words Chris.

Sorry you had to learn the hard way on this one, but, to your credit, you have the right attitude. Now that you know what to look for, you can be more confident that your efforts will bear fruit.

If you are a fan of the show "Gold Rush", its akin to mining for gold without first drilling a test hole to verify that there is gold where you are digging. Which is exactly what the Hoffman crew did last year with miserable results.

In that same vein - pun intended In the next few weeks, I'll be releasing Keyword Miner, which is a browser plugin that shows EMDs and competitive analysis while viewing keyword ideas in Google Adwords keywords tool. It can instantly tell you whether a niche is worth mining before you commit resources to it.
