I've checked backlink watch dot com and some other similar sites, but it seems that their data on total number of backlinks to my site isn't accurate?

So, can anyone please suggest the Best trustworthy source for checking almost accurate number of backlinks?

    Hey Arav,

Majestic SEO has the largest database that I know of for finding backlinks. It's a paid database if you don't have Market Samurai, where it is included.

Are you saying your backlink count is inaccurate because you are checking it against the number of backlinks you have built?

If that's the case, the counts won't match because not every backlink is always indexed by the search engines, and particularly true for profile and comment backlinks.

I have been using Majestic seo since site explorer went down but am just waiting for seoquake to finish their own backlink tool which is currently in BETA apparently this is going to be bullet proof, according to them anyway, I suppose its will just be a case of waiting and seeing

There are tools that you can use to get information about number of backlinks.
Majestic SEO is very good. Second after SEOmoz's OpenSiteExplorer, but of course juicy stuff is paid.
You can also try ahrefs.com even with free account you can still get information like:
    - number od IP address and domains linking to a page, which can be very helpful

The best strategy would be to choose one solution and stick with it, than jumping from one to another. If you have even not perfect solution but you are using it over time you will get the estimate what number of backlinks is good for you.

I use Market Samurai to check back links on lots of sites at once. If I'm just doing a quick check on one site, I use BackLinkWatch.com. Both are usually pretty accurate, in my experience. You just have to keep clicking to remove the little ad box that pops up on BackLinkWatch.com each time you check a new domain.

Okay use the old link search term in google to check my links, none come up. I know I have the links. Seo spyglass shows 54 links which is just about what I want because they are all relevant and it took a year to get that many.

I still show up on google and alexa but dropped by hundreds of thousands. Could I be getting a partial dance or why is google not showing the links but spyglass is.

Unfortunately the "old link search method" has been reported countless times to be highly inaccurate now. Without a service or product such as SEO Spyglass it has become increasingly more difficult to find out backlink info. This is why I make sure I keep organized where my links are. Or try to at least lol
