SMO is the social SEO. SMO doesnot build any incoming links, as in SEO. Though both has its own importance, SEO takes over the advantage.

SMO - are we talking about placing some Facebook, Twitter "I like it" plugins on your site or spamming your Facebook wall with links to your blogs, sites?

As somebody wrote here before me, SMO as the short-term and immediate traffic booster, that would make sense, if you tweet or facebook something, it eventually goes away and it usually happens really fast, especially, if you have 100+ friends list, but maybe I misinterpreted the whole thing.

SEO has been a common activity of website owners for years now. It is no doubt effective. Search Engines sends tons of free traffic to those with the high rankings for popular search terms.

While Social media optimization has only become popular in the past few years as the use of social networking sites has exploded. When compared with successful SEO, social media traffic is less steady. Those who use social media effectively can consistently draw traffic with new content.

      Link Building:
SEO - Inbound links are a large determining factor in rankings.
SMO - Links are a result of success, which means that SEO benefits from good SMO.

      On Page Elements:
SEO - Title tags, headers, image title, bold text and use of keywords are all influential on search engine rankings.
SMO - Coding and tags are not so important, while visual attention grabbers make a bigger impact.

      Titles:
SEO - The title tag of a page tells the search engines what a page is about and carries a lot of weight in the rankings.
SMO - Titles and headlines are extremely important for grabbing attention and getting users to click-through.

Just a note that SEO since the Panda changes now includes SMO. Eric Scmidt, the executive chairman of Google has stated that social signals, the "people you hang with" are now ranking factors.

SEOMOZ's research has also found a strong correlation between social signals and search engine ranking. Strong correlation was found with Facebook shares, likes and comments and Tweets to the URL.

So it seems like you really have to do both now.

They work best when used together. SEO is a little better for a long term strategy while using social to supplement your efforts. Until you've built an audience via SMO, SEO may be the easier way to go depending on who you're targeting.

yeah for long term then SEO is the better way to go. But, you can get a rush of quick traffic with SMO if done the right way. But you'd be better off sticking to legit SEO white hat stuff and not trying to game google. In the long run you will be glad you did.
