Hi guys.I am doing some keyword research .I have found a kw that has a good search volume. I am not sure about keyword ranking difficulty.

THe first website is amazon(pr4)-5 backlinks
second is cnet(pr4)-10 backlinks
third is bestbuy(pr2)-4 links.

Do you think it is hard to outrank them? Their backlinks are using the correct anchor text. I heard it is really hard to outrank them.

Any suggestions please?

Let me clear your for your backlink analysis:

Amazon is one of the world's best online shopping store, cnet is one of the most popular online technology related website where you can download any freeware available on net and bestbuy is also an online shopping store with discount.

All the three sites has back links from best sites not in hundreds but in thousands of great sites even from google and msdn. Outranking these sites require you to have a backlink profile better than these. I am not saying this is impossible but it is something unrealistic. If you have a huge money you can advertize your site on some good newspapers, electronic media, outdoor advrts etc to get some popularity so that people can link to you from their own sites if they found it similar to yours or have some relevance.

The time when you get some hundred links these sites will get thousands only because of their popularity and usefulness. Be realistic and work to get near them and then only think to outrank them.

I wouldn't let any of those sites necessarily put you off. Sometimes you can outrank these sites without building more than a couple of back links (sometimes no back links at all) if you're going for an exact product name. I done it this just this week.

In fact, look at it as a good sign if all you see is those big online stores. It means no one else is really targeting that product.

It's always "sometimes", "possibly" and "maybe". You'll never know until you try. FreeMeal makes a good point about other marketers targeting your keywords.
You can always get up there, it's whether the ROI on your time and/or money is worth it. Usually, doing is the best way of learning.

Like all of these posts, however, there's no real way of helping you without knowing the details of your URL and keywords. And I totally understand why you would want to keep that under wraps.

p.s to zabalex - what he said might have been true a couple of years ago and it might well be his experience now but to say "Outranking these sites require you to have a backlink profile better than these" doesn't necessarily tally, from what I've seen since the Panda updates during 2011.

Edit - I misread zabalex's post (my mistake and I apologize to zabalex) - actually what he says is pretty sound. Those sites would have been easier to beat a couple of years ago - but you're dealing, as usual, with Google's flavour of the month. None of it's easy - but don't let that deter you.

Build as many backlink as possible by using many different anchor text as well as build link to other relevant page in your site.

That kind of brute force backlinking used to work. Good luck with it now.

The benefit you can have over these big sites is that you can purposely target that keyword/product, those big sites don't bother with (they can't bother with) because they are too big - they've got bigger fish to fry!

    Look at it this way...

If you want to out rank amazon for "online book store"? Then good luck with that, you're f****d. You may as well go home now.

You want to out-rank them for the "Acme Energy Saving Popcorn Maker"? Then you could probably take them the cleaners.

If you are going to be scared off every time you see Amazon in the the SERP's you're never going to get anything done.

I totally agree with Freemeal's 2 comments above. If there are lot of shopping sites in the top 10 for a keyword, it is a GOOD SIGN if they are internal pages with only a handful of links. These are exactly the types of keywords I like to go after.

If you build a niche specific website with some good content and get a few hundred backlinks you will probably be looking real good.

Of course it depends on all the competition in the top 10, a couple of EMD's in there with several 100 backlinks mean you have ACTIVE competition on your hands.
