An expert SEO said to me that "The only people who link to each other these days are spammers". This got me thinking that linking is now being associated with spam, getting mass links from the like of Xrumer blasts and Scrape box harvesting is getting easier. Google must be aware of this.

What are the implications? I think one is that if someone is getting 1000's of links into a site 99% of these will be discounted. Only a few of the links will be counted and lead to rankings.

Most people getting 100's of links are wasting their time, it's better to just get a few the good links not low value mass links. What do you guys about this?

link blasts from xrummer and scrapebox are spam and Google is getting much better at spotting them. Unless you are very good and careful and spend alot of time setting up and implementing campaigns you will probably have 99% discounted.

Unfortunatly lots of people see it as an easy win and blast away. then wonder why there site is nowhere to be seen

Yea, it happens of course sometimes when you have a mate with a site etc, but in my opinion if Google sees that your site links out to all the same sites that link in to you, that is a major red flag!

If you have sites with Adsense and you link them together, THEN you are asking for trouble. Also, getting legitimate links from related websites is so much better than spam links from all over.

Thank for the replies, I just thought it was interesting because it gives an indication of the was that things are going. People now have the tools to fire up 1000's of links, logically if it easy to do, the value of doing so but decrease. They may do more harm than good or at the least do no good at all.

That is one of the stupidest things Ive ever heard IM related. Does this SEO expert not use Facebook or Twitter? Has he ever seen the Huffington post or any other major blog? He must be one hell of an SEO expert.

It looks like this kind of strategy is also suspicious to Google, and it might get you flagged for sure, just like blasting links with spam tools like XRumer. Don't try to spam, it's only a huge waste of time.

I agree that link blasting using scrapebox is considered spamming and it is not good to use in building backlinks to the site. Better use manual link building.
