Weird serp results - need some advice!

I am targeting a low-mid competitive keyword, and I managed to get it in the 10-11 spot for a while now. I decided to scale up my link building, and started on a broken link wheel (more like a web then a wheel) and 10 buildmyrank links. I also changed my onpage SEO a bit, and added some links back to my homepage from my site's articles anchored to my target keywords.

There was no change in the serp for a week, and then all of a sudden the homepage of my site vanished from google for it's targeted keyword. One of the articles is on the 3rd page of the home page target keyword. The home page isn't deindexed when I search for site:mysite

It's been 2-3 days now and my homepage hasn't returned. So naturally I have a couple of questions for any seo expert out there:

1.) Is this the mythical Sandbox?
2.) Is this the mythical Google Dance?
3.) Should I stop backlinking?
4.) Should I undo the links back to my homepage on the other articles?

It will come back in a couple of weeks.

I had a site reviewing about bikes where standing on the #3 spot in Google and disappear all in a sudden. I didn't bother, then it came up in two weeks later.

Just listen to him and don't stop backlinking. Site should be back soon in SERPS.

    targeting a low-mid competitive keyword
It actually can be the opposite - you may be targeting very competitive keyword, check what ranks on page one, what is the domain age and PR of those, is there any pages or posts ranking.

Looking at google kewords tool suggested competition level is not enough.

Actually, I'm not sure how what google keyword tool says for the competition. Ranking for page one was a breeze, the problem is that my site's homepage disappeared from the serp. No message in webmaster tools, and a sorta unrelated article on my site targeting a different keyword is on page 3 for the homepage's target keyword.

How old is your site? If it was a new site, Google artificially boosts new sites to get an idea of the quality by sending some test traffic to it. Where does your homepage show up in the SERPs? Just checked using that tool, homepage is not in the top 1000. 1 article is in the 30th spot, and 3 articles are in the top 100-200 range. None of these articles is targeted for the specific keyword, just my homepage.

I doubt it is lose of the honeymoon effect, considering 4 articles which are not even targeted for the keyword are ranking. It's just that the homepage seemed to disappear.

I started BMR a few weeks ago on some of my 10 year old sites. Now they're out of top 100. I haven't done any backlinking in years, then all of a sudden I start again, so that could be the issue. I only did a couple each a day with BMR, though.
I'll slow it down to a couple a week.
