How To Do Keyword Research For Informational Sites (Adsense Sites)

I hate using "keywords" as a means of revenue for your entire business. It should never be that way and if you are relying on keywords for most of your revenue, you should be getting every penny out of it now because it may not last.

I'm going to start with an "informational site" like I talked about here.

With an informational site, you don't really need a specific niche because you just want search traffic for adsense clicks. What you can do is super broad niches like "health" which you can talk about weight loss, bodybuilding, diets, eating right, etc.

So I'm just going to go with that for now - the "health" general topic.

Now I'm going to go to Amazon.com first to sort through some possible topics to cover.

1. Go to Amazon.com
2. Click "books"
3. Click "health, fitness, dieting"
Now, you will see a ton of different "niches" in the left column like:
- Aging
- Alternative Medicine
etc

I'm going to choose one at random: Nutrition

I always click paperback for some reason, idk. So in that catagory you will see the most popular results. These are all great niches, and I'm going to click on the first book there (which has like 500 some reviews - which is good).

I will read the overview of what is inside the book to get some keyword and post ideas for these first 10, 20, or 30 posts.
Here is what I find:
Eat to Live offers a healthy, effective, and scientifically proven Six-Week Plan for shedding a radical amount of weight quickly. The key to the program's success is simple: health = nutrients: calories When the ratio of nutrients to calories in the food you eat is high, fat melts away. The more nutrient-dense food you consume, the more you will be satisfied with fewer calories and the less you will crave fat and high-calorie foods. Eat to Live will help you live longer, reduce your need for medications, and improve your overall health dramatically. It is a book that will change the way you want to eat. Most of all, though, Eat to Live will enable you to lose more weight than you ever thought possible.
Now you know what the book is about, which is:
- eating healthy
- nutrients
- fewer calories
- no fat/less fat
- foods

I will put this into the free GKT so see what I find related to those, and I get a lot of keywords with high search volume related to foods:

After this, I will export that list to excel and use that for my next step which is keyword research. At this point, remember we are making a "broad" site about health that needs to get adsense clicks, so we need super long tails.

I just bought this new tool ($30) at http://keywordresearcher.org and I love it. I've been playing with it for a week now and I love how easy it is to find those super long tails - there's my effn pitch, lol.

I am going to choose a keyword for the list, but you should do this for every keyword in the list. I will choose "anti inflammatory".

I would like to see question based searches, and also searches like "best KEYWORD", etc. You will find out what types of things work well with this tool. I started with: "what * anti inflammatory" and that gave me a list like this:

what anti inflammatory can i give my dog
what anti inflammatory can i take while pregnant
what anti inflammatory can i take with warfarin
what anti inflammatory for dogs
what anti inflammatory is safe during pregnancy

what to take for anti inflammatory
what's the best anti inflammatory

Now there's 74 possible post ideas here and each are super long tail and specific. I usually put this list back in the GKT and see what type of search volume each of these are getting, but trust me, even a keyword with 80 searches a month is something that should be posted on your website.

Now you can generate a list of thousands of keywords in a matter of 15 mins. You just have to sort through them and see which ones you want to go after.

Each post will target a super long tail so creating a page on "what anti inflammatory can i give my dog" and "what anti inflammatory can i take while pregnant" are separate posts.

Keep researching until you have 300 possible posts. 3 HUNDRED.

If you have questions, please ask in the forum not in a PM so everyone can see the answer.

I think next I will go over keyword research with product review sites, and product sites.

Hi, lassy715. Thanks for both your valuable posts I've read this morning. I am curious about something:

Early in this post you talk about making an informational site in the health niche. Then you show keyword research around the words "anti inflammatory" and finally you say keep going until you have 300.

Do you mean to find 300 "anti inflammatory" keywords? And eventually you end up with a health site with thousands of pages?

Or do you mean to find 300 health keywords... and maybe only a dozen on your sample list of "anti inflammatory" keywords end up having enough traffic to warrant a post? (With maybe another handful on "stomach hurts" and a few on "ear wax", etc.)

Or you can try SEOFrog SEO-Spider to get those ideas. Simply crawl a competitor's site

"work the search system" - weeellll, it's not really working the system with keyword research (link building is working the system), it's just being smart about how you title and structure your content.

Okay, even I got confused with your question, but I'll try my best to sort this out:

When you start keyword research for an informational site, lets stick in the health niche for now, you want to find super long tail phrases, questions, etc that people will type into a search engine.

I just used "anti inflammatory" as an example of what you could START with. I would use the tool to find thousands of long tail phrases around anti inflammatory.

I would then move on to other parts of "health" and do more keyword research.

I don't like the health niche, I don't know much about it. But let's say I wanted to start a site on "making money online"...much easier for me.

I would go in and get a ton of long tails about Wordpress, Hosting, Writing Content, Blogging, SEO, PPC, etc. Then I would sort through those keywords and find the ones that I thought were not only useful to the visitor, but also had some search volume.

As far as search volume goes, I have created posts around keywords with 10 searches or less per month!

I don't look at competition with these posts.

So you would gather 300 of these and now you have all your titles written out already...now you just have to post the content. I suggest posting 1 per day at least.

Boy I hope that made sense and answered your question. The bottom line is that with this type of site, which hopefully you have some "passion" about, does not have to have a strict theme...a general theme yes, but nothing strict. You just keep posting content for the long tail.

Never heard of those, but cool. I use that tool because it scrapes right from google's drop down.
