I have been doing offline marketing and starting to learn about keyword research and seo. Im looking for some suggestions on WSO or ebook that covers how to perform keyword research and basically do seo for local businesses. I was messing around with google keyword tool and it seems like 90% of the exact phrases for profession+city show 0 results. Is this normal? For instance, i was checking ct scan michigan, cat scan michigan, etc and they all returned 0 exact matches.

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Justin, I've just released a new WSO called ESP Niche Riches that is an over-the-shoulder look at how I use the Google KW tool and other free tools to research keywords before entering a niche.

I think what you're asking for is really two products however. One is for keyword research and the other is for SEO. ESP Niche Riches covers the keyword research part of it and the OTO has an on-page SEO checklist but it's not an in-depth guide on how to do SEO.

For that, I'd recommend FastAttackSEO. It's very in-depth and lays out an entire strategy on what his SEO company does for his clients. Some of the tools in his system are paid and some of them are free.

As far as your numbers go, many people don't put the city name when they search for something local. Google localizes their searches for them according to their IP address and gives them back the local results they want without them having to put their city name.

In your example above, I would use the KW "cat scan" and drill down on that KW to see what else comes up and see if you can find some other KWs that have some traffic. I would also try using broad and phrase match instead of exact.

    Hope this helps.
