.EU domain names - Any good examples?

Hi,

I tend to stick to using .com and .co.uk domain names if I can.

However, for certain niches I am in, I see that some .EU domain names are available.

Has anyone had any success or seen some successful websites ending in the .EU suffix?

Also, does anyone have any ideas if non .com or non tld domain names can rank well and do you have any examples I can see in the search engines. They don't have to be your sites, just someone else's I can see evidence of, so I can convince others about it.

That would be much appreciated.

    I believe and will always believe that you can rank on the first page of google with any domain name. In all my years online I got first page of google even for .info domains. The real question here is your content. When you produce fresh and new content on a daily basis you will get ranked if you want.

    I think the best ones are dot com.

      Hi,

      Thanks for the reply.

      I'm just trying to find evidence of someone, somewhere ranking well for something, with a .EU domain name.

      I am having trouble trying to find anything to be honest.

      If I can find some examples then I may be able to convince others it may be worth buying and building some .EU websites.

      So hopefully there is some evidence of well ranked .EU sites somewhere.

      So any suggestions will be gratefully received.

      Hi, Let me differ with Mike Hersh,

      You cannot be at all time on the first page of google with any domain name and this is not practially true... The Internet is a market place with stiff competition and this will mislead Steadyon...

      First to be able to rank well on search engines, your choice of domain extension and qualities will affect this. You cannot easily play the search engines in most cases. Therefore let us look at the qualities of a good domain you can use...

      1. Mindshare: A good domain you should use most be easily remembered and that is mindshare.

      2. Typo-generic: Instead of typing it on search engines, visitors should just type it on the browser and get to your site. This is typo-generic

      3. Extension: Generally, the prefered domain extention is .com, then .net and .org. Pure and simple for majority... Now for TLD, .eu is ok but will have to require more work to compete with the .com and other extensions...

      4. Cybersquatting: You should check if this domain you want to register has a .brand on it before using it...

      5. Traffic and Credibility: Yes, while click2sell.eu may be making some measure of success, let me stress here that they battle with a lot of issues relating to trust and standard. Most poeple who sell products there are not taken seriously... This is because, they would have been able to use .com instead of .eu for professionalism and I tell you, they loose businesses.

      Late 2007, topix.net bought topix.com for $1Million from a different company because they were losing salse and traffic to topix.com

      My advice: Go for .com, mix numbers, words to still achieve a domain you want..

    For now stick with .com if possible it is still number one and likely to stay that way, if you are marketing to your country using your own country address i.e .co.uk however I am not convinced that other domain names are treated with the same kind of respect at the moment. You have to also consider that if someone knows the name of your site they are likely to type in the .com first if they wish to return. I have also heard a rumour that there was some consideration that adult domains could end .xxx. If domains change significantly a lot of domains are going to seriously fall in value. Fish.com sold for $1,000,000 will fish.eu do the same? I doubt it.

    Oh I forgot to say click2sell.eu is fairly successful so I guess some people are doing ok with such domains.

    One that is interesting to me is Niche Marketing - Andy Beard I hadn't
    even thought of the site in years but it was from a poster in
    another forum that I had a lot of appreciation for. He also did
    post in the old WF for awhile too. He was just starting out at
    the time. I just typed it in to make sure it was still online and
    it looks like things are moving, but I don't know about its
    status. One of his services is SEO, so I guess the status must
    be ok.

    Incidentally, I think I'll try registering "f*ckthe" as a .eu domain. (Although knowing how much the EU abhors criticism, I doubt it would even be allowed).

    When the EU domains first came out, as far as I remember,
    you couldn't just register any domain like you can a .com.
    It had to be either your name or a registered business name.
    Not sure if that's still the case,
    but it might explain why there are still some good ones available.

    I think .com is better myself. When most people think web sites, they usually think .com.

    Here's something I noticed the other day, while playing with my daughters Itouch. When your typing in a web address, there is a key just for ".com". Just thought it was interesting.

      Thanks for the replies guys.

      I agree that 99% of the time .com is definitely the best if possible.

      As we all know, most if not all of the good .com names have gone.

      So, if a good .eu name was available would it be worth getting and trying to build traffic. Agreed, some of the people will eventually end up trying the .com in the months and years to come, but could one still get enough worthwhile traffic with a .eu name?

      In other words, suppose "business.eu" was available (it's not), but wouldn't that be better than say "business123.com" or "business-help.com" etc...

      What do you think?

    After .com, go for .org unless your intended site is adult or humour.

    The only time I'd recommend a .eu is if your target market is there, and your first choice keyword is available.

    However, some people must pay little attention to the domain extension as some .co.uk sites we manage, attract USA customers and from other countries, who buy and then complain that they didn't realise they were buying from the UK!!!

      Then you've just answered your own question - if it can lead to complaints or issues, cut out the cause.

        Maybe. But then again a lot more people realise it's their mistake when they get an explanation and aren't bothered. Most of the time they carry on being customers.

    Hi all, greetings from Switzerland. I know this is an older post but interesting and pertinent nonetheless. Since I've come to live in Switzerland and also belong to various expat groups here I have made the following discovery.

    Most people here prefer .com domains unless they are a service business or a school or a local business, in which case they use .ch (for Switzerland) or .it for Italy, etc.

    I have yet to come across a .eu domain. Have been asking around here if it would be fruitful to get an .eu domain name since my desired .com domains are all taken, and everyone recommends to just choose another name so I can use the .com or the .ch

    If you are marketing specifically in a European country I would highly recommend you using the various country domains (.fr, .ch, .it, etc.) instead of .eu

    Hi everyone,

    i've recently been tasked with migrating our existing .co.uk site into our parent companies .eu website.

    At the moment we rank really well with seo on google, and although im moving the exact same pages across to the parent site using the 301 redirect im concerned about the seo never quite picking up again to its current level in UK google searches.

    Anyone have any thoughts on this?
