Why is amazon first for the search "buy" ?

If i put buy into google i get amazon first, but i cannot see buy in title description or wording of site.

    Just did a search in Canada and Buy.com holds the top spot. This sounds like the logical choice for Google .com also.

      I agree, but I am in the Uk and amazon is first followed by uk.buy.com followed by buy.com followed by carphone warehouse then buy.co.uk

    Buy.com also holds the top spot in an unbiased US google search. Amazon isn't even on page 1, actually.

    This is actually a great SEO lesson. The reason they will rank so well for the keyword 'buy', is because a huge number of their backlinks will have 'buy' in their anchor text.

    For example, other sites will have a link to amazon saying 'buy pink socks'.
    Anchor text is a big factor that Google uses to tell if a page is relevant to their keywords. If lots of websites link to your website with 'buy pink socks' in it, then there is a good chance it will be a site that sells pink socks.

    So to sum up, it is the fact that they have 'buy' in the anchor text of the backlinks coming into their site.

    So what can you take away from this?
    If you have a website about red bouncing balls, make sure you have the text 'red bouncing balls' in the anchor text of your backlinks.

      I absolutely agree. Another example of this is when you put the words "click here" (without quotes) into Google. The Adobe website is at #1, and the words click here are not in the title or anywhere on the page.

    As TB has already mentioned, it's the power of backlinks and specifically what anchor text is used.

    The most famous example is

    click here

    which brings up the Adobe Reader download page. Nowhere on that page is the term "click here", but there are literally millions of sites that have a "Click here" link to the Adobe Reader page.
