Has anyone else suffered this? My sites are micro niche sites,

Did you lose on all terms or just one? One of my websites got dumped. It's been happening since 2010. It runs hot for awhile and then goes out.

What were the bounce rate and average time on site?

Both my bounce rate and average time on site dipped really low in the past few days. Of course my Adsense revenue went up. Then the traffic disappeared.

I've seen this happen many times in the past few years. I believe this is what people refer to as 'overoptimization' slaps.

    Hi,

If you've been relying on a certain network or site for links that could have been hit/devalued and therefore affected your sites.

most of my pages are now rankings between 40-70 positions on google.

Does this sound like a penalty? If so these sites are dead and buried?

Link devaluation maybe, or a link penalty.

There's always a way back (as long as you aren't de-indexed, which you aren't.)

If this is what went wrong, it might likely indicate:

          1) Your links come from too few sources
          2) Your links repeat the same exact anchor text a lot of times.

Generally the way out would be:

          1) Diversify the source of your backlinks
          2) Diversity the anchor text

If you have been 'penalized' by Google, it will probably be time-based and phrase-based. You just have to keep re-working the SEO to try and get out.

No idea why they actually hate them, but I used to have quite a few of them until they were de-indexed by Google last year.

My 'one page' websites fared poorly. Perhaps 5-10 pages and a contact/privacy page would have been a lot safer.

It's hard to say whether something is a penalty or not, it all depends how you promote your website. Do you use dodgy stratagies that Google do not like, or are they all white hat techniques?

With some of Googles previous updates many people using perfectly good white hat techniques showed drops in page rank initially, but when the dust settled they regained ground, with some getting better pr than before. It is probably too early to tell yet. Stick to white hat techniques and check again in a month or two.

My sites have just took a rankings hit today! 90% of them are coupon sites monetized with adsense and they have all dropped in the rankings by about 40 places.
The remainder of my sites are non coupon sites and they are unaffected!
It's tough playing google roulette as I needed the revenue to subsidise my income.
    Now what do I do?

Hi, I've been expecting a penalty to come at some stage because I've seen other people go the same way for possibly similar reasons and from what experience I've learn't in IM so far.
My deductions are I have micro niche sites which are predominantly coupon info sites and some other non coupon sites (these have not been penalised) So I can deduce the issue is with the coupon sites.
All sites have links built with WF link providers and reputable Fiverr gig outsourcers with a limited amount of manual linking by myself. I don't think link building practices are the cause otherwise all my sites would have been hit.
My EMD's include brand names which could possibly be an issue and my sites don't actually offer coupons, only info on where to find them, so a google engineer could argue my sites are MFA and don't offer the reader any real value.
Bounce rates are high as are the CTR rates which was good for revenue while it lasted (7 months) which probably hasn't helped.
So in conclusion I think I've sort of answered the post myself but feel it's worth noting to advise anyone else who's thinking of embarking down this route to beware.
Obviously I'm wounded and the loss of revenue is an issue but I will move forward positively. I've had a taste of making money online after years of making very little.
The question I posed was "what do I do now" i.e any constructive comments about how to build a solid sustainable IM business moving forward. I'm not looking for answers on how to fix my "broken sites" while wasting time and money I could best put into a more ethical and dependable internet venture.

I would need more information about the situation.

What did you do to your website before this happened?

Did you change the theme at all?

    Did you buy any traffic?

    How old is the site?

    Any information would be great.

The same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago where many sites with adsense were penalized about 50 spots. Not deindexed though. Also, some of them were coupon sites too. I also had some 75 page authority sites penalized. Basically it was anything with adsense. Hard to say what caused the penalty but my guess is it was either most of them were mfa's or that I had overoptimized them too much for the same anchor text/keyword. But the fact that u had coupon site s penalized and I did too is sort of intriguing. I would think coupon sites wouldn't matter to google. So my guess is overoptimization and not trademark/coupons. Sorry to hear this. Get back on the horse and rebuild but try to avoid using adsense and use cpa instead with coupons.
Hi, thanks for the empathy. I think what happened with me was last week one of the coupon companies that I was promoting emailed me last week demanding that I remove their brand from my website. However within 24hrs my site was de-indexed and webmaster tools had a message on the site saying my site was in violation of the rules. I removed all code and block the site from search engine bots thus parking the site in cyber space in an attempt to shield it from my remaining sites.
Unfortunately a week later, I've essentially lost them all cos they won't get traffic where they are. So I can only assume that last weeks activity triggered off a manual review of my sites.
I don't think it is over optimisation as I check all my sites for this and my "non coupon" sites are all unaffected and they've been built and linked to in EXACTLY the same way.
I think there are legal issues with using a brand in your URL, do a google search on Domain name attorneys, there is plenty of advice about cyber squatting, typo squatting etc and the legalities of it all. Bottom line is if a big company took out a law suit on you you could potentially lose everything!
For now I'm going to put up a few non coupon sites and focus my efforts on Amazon to see what fruits can be picked there.
Thanks for your reply and good luck in moving forward.
    Cheers, Paul

I didn't make any changes to the site before this happened.

    No change of theme.

Never bought or funneled any traffic.

Sites are between 3 and 7 months old.

Non-coupon sites have been built/backlinked optimized EXACTLY the same way and have been unaffected.

I'm leaning towards coupon brand names in the EMD and the fact none of my sites have coupons available only info on where to find them.

Hey - Bad news. Google has basically admitted that you can destroy your competitors here at the bottom, see the email from google: (can't post the link - so go to trafficplanet and topic 1486 - this has all been happening in the last week.

I have been dealing with the same thing. I have never done anything with blog comments. Have worked very hard to make sure the links to my site are real, based on promotion and good strong articles. But it seems someone spammed me with scrapebox and/or xrumer. killing me. And I have 15+ years 100,000+ links and 20,000+ domains. The joke is the garbage that is now ranking is barely relevant. Google is so dumb, they are hurting the accuracy of the search results and opening uo a "garbage links to your competitor" arms race. Gonna be BS.

Like said above focus on quality, stay away from junk links and penalized sites should recover and get some fiverr gigs to trash your competitors

Hey Paul, it certainly seems like they targeted your coupon sites, but if you look around there are multiple coupon sites per coupon keyword out there. And they are all alive and kicking. It's possible that I was either reported by the actual company or another competitor, but the difference is all my sites were affected (the ones with Adsense, at least). For that reason I think the penalty was something other than coupon sites....like over-optimization or just the appearance of mfa-style sites. Then they just wiped the slate clean. Another thing you can do is continue building them, but flip them for 10x the monthly earnings.

Nothing to do with Google Dance! I've made a change to one of my websites by taking an ad block away from above the fold allowing more content to be viewed when the page is opened up.
I've detailed the changes on a reconsideration request and resubmitted my site to Google. Whilst submitting this request i've asked if the quality engineers can be more specific if my amendment hasn't resolved the cause of the penalty.
I'll post back when I've got a reply from the big G.

That's interesting, I still have some EMD sites ranked fairly high on google (top 3).

Were you link building to these in anyway?

Also are these all on the same google webmaster account? What about your hosting, are they all on the same account; maybe your hosting was down without your knowledge and caused your ranks to slip.

To the OP, if the site in your sig, Natural Health Supplement Reviews, is an example of the types of sites that dropped then Google's doing its job right. Chances are your other sites are just as low quaility and will need to provide some usefulness to the user. I certainly wouldn't want that in my SERPs if I were looking for reviews.

    Hi mate,

You should build the quality link building to maintain the good keyword ranking for long time. May be google updated yesterday with your site .
And in that time, you may lost your rank .
But, if you start concentrate on keyword ranking, you will get your rank in short time.
Don't dis appoint for this reason and don't give up.

Google Webmaster Tools notice of unnatural links detected to http://xxxxxxxxxxx/

Dear Site Owner or Webmaster of http://xxxxxxxxxxxxx/,
We've detected that some of your site's pages may be using techniques that are outside Google's Webmaster Guidelines.

We encourage you to make changes to your site, so that it meets our Quality Guidelines. Once you've made these changes, please submit your site for reconsideration in Google's search results.
If you find unnatural links to your site that you are unable to control or remove, please provide the details in your reconsideration request.
If you have additional questions about how to resolve this issue, please see our Webmaster Help Forum for support.
    Yours sincerely,
    Google Search Quality Team

Admittedly I've bought links from reputed Warriors on here and a few highly recommended fiverr gigs that were recommended on another WSO from here.
I, like lots of other people don't have time to laboriously backlink to lots of micro niche sites hence paying for someone else to do the work for me.
Big companies outsource their seo efforts so why can't I but on a smaller scale. What's the best backlinking strategy moving forward? Any advice?
