I searched for "best mens watches" without quotes. The second result was a Squidoo page. I checked and it has no backlinks and is only a few weeks old. I thought that these free sites were not great in terms of SEO.

The thing that struck me was 1. no backlinks 2. New site 3. Free Hosting

I did a google search for the phrase: Best Mens Watches

The 2nd result was a Squidoo page.

I checked the page and it had 0 backlinks.

The page was also only a few weeks old.

I thought free sites like this were not good. Any idea how it got that high?

Sometimes when search engines crawls and a new site has pops up it initially indexes it very high as it is new.

But as time goes by it will go down if not effort is being made to improve it.

Squidoo has a relatively high domain authority, so as Anthony has mentioned, a new page can rank highly for a short while.

If you check in a week or two, it will be highly unlikely that it will still be ranking on page one.

I'd have to agree with Anthony Flatt. From my experience all my brand new sites were on 1st page within 1 week of submitting to G...Then shortly after all sites went down to nowhere land.

My new sites almost always get ranked on the first page when I first put them up, but drop significantly until I add more content and start building links.

UMS is right. Its often seen to get a new web page ranked high due to domain authority but as time goes it goes down.

Remember google do not show the vast majority of links they have to a website, it might be that you cannot see those links (particularly in a new site).

Also the site is ranked #368 in the Fashion and Beauty section of Squidoo (out of 7000+ squidoo pages) which tells me they have done some work to get to that level.

For example if you hover over the Squidoo Like button you can see 11 likes, which are basically 11 votes from other squidoo lens owners (who might be owned by the same person for all we know).

I suspect this is the reason it's ranking so well. e.g. Squidoo optimisations. That and piggy backing on the authority squidoo has with google (which of course is the main reason to use a site like this).

I think there is Squidoo optimisation and we can not say that it is on first page without doing any optimization tool. Just let me find the solid reason behind that.
