Press Releases for SEO and Traffic?

So I have recently come to the conclusion that i can probably get a lot better traction for my website if I create really newsworthy content in the form of a press release and submit on the news wires for a nice fee. I have a large budget for marketing and think this would have the most immediate impact on our traffic and SEO. Let me know your thoughts as this method is new to me. Thanks

As with anything, it's definitely worth a try. I can't promise you great results, as I haven't made extensive use of press releases myself (and, even if I had, your results might not be the same as mine.) But you'll never know until you give it a shot.

You can get traffic with the free press release sites online. Prweb.com will cost you the most, but with sites like prlog.com and pressexposure.com... you can get traffic for free. I use these sites and more everyday.

Press releases are worth a try for SEO and traffic. They are highly praised by Google, even after the Panda update. They will give you high quality backlinks than the other sources like article directories and Web 2.0 properties.

Can you use 2 or 3 press release sites at the same time with the same text?

How would you know you are not overlapping your efforts and annoying outlets, especially if using the sites that are free? Surely the free sites send to at least same of the outlets?

Would you recommend that each site's press release be on a different topic?

Is it more advantageous to use a paid release site than the free ones?

Apologies in advance for all the questions, but I will be needing to get a press release prepared and sent out in 3-4 months from now, and might as well do just it the right way first.

I certainly prefer press release for SEO,the high quality backlinks they deliver are totally devastating even for panda, I got nothing on traffic for it but for SEO, it's a can't do without for me especially in touch competitions, it gives you a really good edge...

Syndicating press releases works extremely well if you prepare properly.

I ran a Google news site for a while, and I accepted press releases. I'd say around 80% of the press releases submitted were blatant adverts that I couldn't accept.

I even offered free information on how to craft a good press release that focused on news, but it made no difference. I still got bad adverts instead.

A press release can certainly promote a web site, a product, an event, etc, but it has to have a newsworthy message at its core. Any promotion should be done in a gentle, subtle manner.

A press release can have a good effect on your serps and perhaps traffic but as mentioned for maximum benefit they definitely have to be written properly. As mentioned they can't sound like an advert but can mention something newsworthy that your website has done. Might be worth reading up on how to write if unsure.

  • They are great for SEO and backlinks. But they are also good for actually getting press. Make sure it is real news (not just an advert) and follow up with key publications to try to get your story out there. Media coverage equals credibility.

      Let me just add....

Press Releases are not there to generate you links. This is what article marketing is for.

Look at the magic word: PRESS. I'll say it again: PRESS.

If it isn't being sent directly to individual journalists' inboxes or fax machines, it isn't a press release. If you just throw it online (and by the way, the media never look for news stories this way), how on earth can you expect the media to see it?

If your answer is 'I don't care if they see it, I just want the link juice/traffic'...

.....then don't bother. Spend your money elsewhere - this isn't what press releases are for.

Still, they are a powerful tool. I took a client last week and 4 days later he ended up with 40 newspaper stories, a bunch of radio interviews and the Discovery Channel came knocking on his door.

The result of this will give him so much more than he would have got had he just published a press release online.

It's about time the world woke up and realized what a press release actually is.

Now, I have to be careful what I say here because I own a press release writing and distribution company - but...

Don't ever even consider free sites, or even some of the big named paid online PR sites. Many of them make revenue by hosting ads next to the majority of press releases.

These ads are targeted based on the content of the press release. Therefore, you're actually just providing a platform for the hosting of your competitor's ads!

There is some myth that the free sites are useful. Believe me, after ten years in the industry I can confidently say otherwise! I've taken hundred of clients who say the benefits of paying for a service over using a free site are just awesome.

Besides, if it's simply being posted online - how is it a PRESS Release? The media never see it! It's basically a *******ized form of article marketing that's been re-packaged and re-named.

Your best bet is to find genuine news from within your business and do a real press release to actual targeted media - directly to the journalists - not to some online publishing platform.

That's what PR guys are there to do. I can't advertise here, but will crypitcally say that you'll get change for $100!

    Hi -

    @JImMichael - I would respectfully disagree.

I'll stick with PRWeb, since it's one I know best... Their news releases get picked up by hundreds of news aggregators. News aggregation sites use the PRWeb feed to populate their sites with content. It is not uncommon for hundreds of new sites to list the headline, abstract, link, and in many cases the entire body, of the news release. The SEO value can't be overstated.

Moreover, even PRWeb will tell you that in this day and age, the online news release is as much a link building strategy as it is a public relations strategy.

Full disclosure: I gave a Webinar for PRWeb back in 2009 on How to Use Press Releases To Drive Social Media Campaigns." The webinar was their #3 for the year - #1 was Lee Oden - also discussing using news to drive SEO....

From my experience (i did a press release with PrWeb, and this was not for a very newsforthy subject), you may expect seeing the improvement in your SE rankings in about a week after its publishing, and then the results will gradually start to degrade in another week or two.

I've heard of this SEO strategy for a good while now, and while I'm sure it must work, is there not a duplicate content penalty to some degree if the same press/news release is syndicated to a bunch of different sites?

Uniqueness is one of the main ideas behind tools such as article marketing robot because these tools use spinner articles, but the press releases don't seem to necessarily have to be unique. I'm not at all worried about using press releases for backlinks, but I am wondering if there are any adverse SEO effects compared to what there would be if the submissions were entirely unique, no matter how small.

      No, there isn't.

Just as there isn't with articles in article directories.

You can use AMR without spinning. That may be the main idea of people selling them, but it's totally unnecessary. For article marketing just as for press releases. It's all an urban myth.

      No, there aren't.

The value of a backlink isn't somehow, magically, varied according to whether or not the content to which it's attached has previously been published. Nor according to whether it's indexed in Google's main or supplemental index.

alexa you're on a mission to crush article spinning aren't you? haha.

As far as press releases go, they're good for ranking keywords, yes. There was an article on SEOmoz about press releases, and it showed that after a few months, a large majority of the links associated with the release were gone. Essentially, links associated with a press release come and go.

Listen to what JimMichael is saying though people. Although a press release may help a few keywords, it can be used to generate traffic you've never even imagined before if used properly.

Press release is great way to drive traffic if we do it in right way. Lots of marketer even use press release to spread word about whats happening into their world to maintain the relation between their customers. in simple term they use it as relation management tool.

I also know people who uses press release to maintain their online reputation. So people also use PR as a online reputation management tool.

So for me PR is very good tactic to put your efforts on..
