Hi there,

I am thinking about buying an expiring domain. Its a PR5 with all natural ligitimate backlinks so the backlinks will all stick.

The likes of Terry Kyle will say that domains keep their value, others say they dont.

Has anyone done this and what has been the result?

Cheers
W

I've done the ol' 301 redirect with a few domains. On one of them I was de-indexed. I'm not entirely sure that the 301 was the direct cause. But that would be my number 1 guess. I would prefer to build content on the PR 5 and use backlinks to juice up your money sites. But if you're determined to do a 301 redirect, then it should work.

Or at least, it has in most cases for me.

Was the deindexing case just a single 301 redirect or many 301 redirects to a single domain? We've experienced the same issue using many 301 redirects (many meaning over a thousand) and after removing most of them but still having maybe a couple dozen, we aren't experiencing the same issue.

It's hard to say how much a 301 redirect of an old domain can help - the one positive result I've seen from a 301 redirect was from years ago - it helped the primary site rank for a term that the redirected domain was an exact match for.

Thats the ticket right there . If your site depends too heavily on redirects its a problem. Cutts point blank says it on one of his videos - I don't recall which one.

Perhaps the answer is to redirect just a few strong pages to the main domain, and let the other pre existing ones return a 404.

Anyone else have any input on this?

Im slowly coming to the opinion that only actual domains bought from an owner rather than through an expiring domain auction will work....

p.s. I just wanted to clarify that Terry Kyle does recommending buying old domains but he doesnt say what the actual process should be
