Is there any benefit to change the google crawl rate? Has anyone had any positive or negative experience in doing so?

How often do you post content?

if you post daily then get your site crawled daily, if it's weekly then have it crawled weekly.. Ideally you want new content whenever google vistits... but then again google probably doesn't pay that much attention to what you specify as your crawl rate!

      Thanks M Thompson, I think you are referring to a sitemap.xml .

Webmaster, settings has custom crawl rate setting and was wondering if anyone has used this? If you did, Did you have positive or negative experience using it?

Crawling rate is basically depends on how often you update content on website, if you update content according to your crawling rate then there is not an issue but if you are not updating your content accordingly then Google can decrease your crawling rate.
