Too Much Too Fast Harmful-What is correct amount?

I have read posts on here where people had their site unlisted or some other problem with a affiliate program or offer because they had to many backlinks too fast (or that is what they said.)

First, is this true?

If so, what are the parameters and what would be the correct way of doing it?

I've been reading a lot online to learn more about SEO now that the sites I have are doing ok income wise and I want to really pump it up, but don't want to harm the work I've done thus far.

From my experience as long as you vary the anchor text and use various pages (not all one url) you can backlink at an incredibly fast pace without any consequences. Only issues I've run into is over optimizing for a keyword and getting too many sitewide links as opposed to unique C class Ips. Then again, you can always "link wheel" and filter your low quality links through a trusted site, back to yours.

Vary your anchor text and don't do 100k one day and 0 the next. A lot of people stress too much about the amount of backlinks they're generating. Remember, Google isn't going to find them all at once.

Definitely, new sites with loads of backlinks aren't going to go anywhere. Start off slowly and scale up when comfortable and your site gains some authority. With a new site start with directory submissions (free and/or paid depending on your budget), high PR blog comments, and relevant links. Find sites related to yours and get them to link to you (comments, guest posts, etc.)

If you want to scale up but aren't sure your site can handle it - set up some web 2.0s (squidoo, wordpress, tumblr, blogspot, etc.) with links to your money site and backlink your 2.0s. You can go a step further and create blogs relevant to your niche and backlink them individually with directories, high PR comments etc. Link the blogs to your money site and your web 2.0s, then backlink your 2.0s aggressively (blog comments, profile links, social bookmarks, etc.). Throw up some adsense on your blogs and diversify your income stream.
