On Silos (within each Silo)?

Lets say I have a Silo

Shoe Shopping (9900 searches/month, exact)
*this is made up kw and search numbers*

Ok within that, there are only maybe 10 sub kw phrases, (longtails)
that can be targeted. Lets say its

Shoe Shopping discounts (150 searches/month)
Shoe shopping websites (130 searches/month)
Shoe Shopping price lists (200 searches/month)
etc etc

Very low low monthly search totals on all the longtails that would be able to be blog posts or related articles within the silos

Sure they strenthen the silo, but the monthly search totals are really only worth it if you add up ALL the totals for the longtails inside the silo, Then maybe that adds up to 1000-1500 searches/month

Still worth making that Silo? Or would it be better to just target the main Silo landing page kw with 9900 searches/month and not waste time on all the low search volume subpages

I guess you are right, it strengthens all the pages within the silo when they link to each other and certainly makes the main silo landing page for that Silo much stronger

wonder how fast to add inner pages, I guess google doesnt care
would not be more than 1-2 per day

I would just shedule it with 2 per week so you probably get a ranking bonus for fresh content

    Interesting you brought that up.

I currently have a single KW that I'm gunning for and is doing well - but it's going to take me a long time to get to where I want. However, I have a lot of long tail KWs that have a lot less searches within the nich but there really is no competition. So basically, I do both.

However, if you want to do it just one way, the multiple silos w/ less searches would be your best bet.

in one of my sites my main keyword search has 100k unique. The curious fact is that only 16% of visitors come through the main word and I'm ranked # 3 in the main word.

All other 84% comes from variations in the main keyword. And most of the words are "lost" in the middle of the support pages.

If the site is profitable, invest everything you think is reasonable to improve it.

I will put it for you like this:

Which is better? A Single sales person or a team of sales people?

Sure, you are always going to have 1 sales person that is going to out perform all the others, but if that ONE awesome sales person specializes in a more competitive area, then it might take him awhile to get started.

While the others might not bring in as much alone, but together they bring in a lot, and do start off quick in the beginning. Where that 1 great sales person has some awesome potential, but is slow to start.

      Undestand?

It is ALWAYS best to have more web pages for the search results so you have more chances to get more eyes on the pages.

So what if you have a bunch of pages that only get several hundred views a month. Add them all up and you will be laughing.

A siloed site ( set up properly) is going to pass its link juice onto that main page that gets a lot of searches. So when you do your initial backlinking on those easy to rank for pages you will be passing on their link power, and backlink power to it. So if you have a dozen or so lower searched, and easy to rank for pages supporting that one monster of a page, you will find it quite a bit easier to get higher rankings for that main page.

I have some larger sites that have multiple monster keywords. Each one has its OWN silo structure built in. I work on getting all the smaller and easier keywords to rank, while at the same time I am actually helping my monster keywords to rank as well. This is all done because of the way I link my pages.

Thanks again. What do you guys recommend for incorporating all the long tails. You and I both know there are way too many to make individual pages for each one. Do you work them into the text of the pages inside the Silos?

If you have too many keywords for individual posts, I would throw them in Google's keyword tool, and us the ones with the most traffic for the main keyword of however many posts you have time for.

How large do you make each page within the silos? The articles etc? I was thinking 500 words but
    what do you make them?

The supporting inner silo pages, support the silo landing page, and tell google that this site is MORE related and relevant for that kw, than other sites, even sites that have more high PR backlinks.

      Thats the theory anyways
