Depends what your definition of cheap is. PR web is very good value and imo the best but I would not say it is "cheap".

I know SEO isn't cheap. I just don't want to pay $200 for every single PR distribution :-)

Fair enough. they have an all you can submit package which could work out very cheap if you can create and supply large amounts of PR.

Otherwise just type in online PR distribution to Google and see what looks best, then ask for feedback on your top options before deciding.

I could reccomend a couple more but I get the impression you are in the US and I only know UK focussed distributors.

So if you sent a "release" to The Mail Online you would not class them to be an online press publiction and the release can't be called a "press release"?

I can call a car a "from A to B woosher" but the fact is the majority of the population still understand it to be a car.

I am going to do a press release to get some links for my new local business site. My business is in Newcastle Australia so customers from the US will not be able to purchase from me. It is purely to get links for my site and hopefully outrank some of my local competitors.

I have seen Press release monkey that offer a $330 service to submit to prnewswire as well as prbuzz and other places. I have also seen things as cheap as Fivrr gigs that will submit to prbuzz and sbwire for just 5 bucks.

So which do people think would be the best for my situation?

Could I find that no one on prnewswire picks up my story cause it won't be of interest in the US so the big ticket price isn't worth it?

I have heard prbuzz just post press releases automatically to their network so its kind of junky?

What would b best for me with my goal to get reputable PR links?

Not sure if this would be worth the money spent, as PR companies submit a lot of new coverages each day.

Since, your aim is to outrank competition in SEs, remember that since there are many links posted by these PR companies each day, you will get little if any PR Juice.

With ~ $400, my personal opinion is that you're better off buying one-way high quality relevant links.

Just so you know in this Google Group post Matt Cutts stated links from press releases won't benefit website rankings, but you never know.

Note: I wouldn't expect links from press release web sites to benefit your rankings, however.

But you would always rank for links that the media picked up from your pr.
So only send out prs for material that is interesting enough.

By the way there is a gig on fiverr that sends to both prbuzz and sbwire in one shot.

You want to rank for local keywords in Newcastle, Australia? I'd go with local press - radio, TV, magazines and local newspapers. A press release online might do you some good, but is there not one over there that caters for your market rather than a generic one? No point blowing money on a global press release that isn't targeting your market. This might take a bit of homework. You possibly won't find it online. But I think you'd be better served by local media outlet advertising.

Hello, Simply put, they were an easy and effective way to pay for links... and that's not even considering if the release is actually newsworthy. But now they're making the job of an SEO consultant a little tougher. You can try with these: PRWeb, Market Wire, SBwire, eReleases, 1888PressRelease, Business Wire, PR.com

PRWeb is the leader in online news distribution and online publicity. PRWeb "democratized" news distribution, transforming the "press release" from an expensive tool used by large corporations to an inexpensive yet highly effective way for organizations of all sizes to distribute their news on the Internet, increase their visibility online and attract customers. PRWeb is a service of Vocus. Hope this will work with your requirement. Thanks. Have a nice day

PRWeb is declining...Really, many are moving towards MarketersMedia now with lower cost yet better distribution reach. The Distribution report from MM is awesome too. I demo'd PRWeb some time ago and thought it was rather expensive however appeared to be the leading online PR service. I will try MarketersMedia for sure.

I strongly recommend that you use PRWEBS instead of using or purchasing cheaper PR submission services, you're just going to waste your money and time. PR will is expensive but it will probable bridge the gap you need in terms of ranking, search engine visibility and exposure.
