To homepage, or not to homepage....

Ok, so I am starting a new project and website which will take the form of a blog.

What I want to know is whether it is best to have a static homepage or for the blog (revolving with new topics) as the homepage.

What is best for SEO purposes? I have no real need for a homepage but am thinking that building links for the root site without a static page may damage ranking for the site as a whole? Any ideas?

The amount of authority given to your home page is not affected by whether you have a static home page or not. Building backlinks to static and rolling pages will result in the same amount of link juice. There's no damage to worry about.

When I build Amazon Affiliate type sites, then it makes sense for me to have a static home page. When I build a site on "Internet Marketing Tips," I might want a blog structure.

I usually prefer the static home page, but it's more of a personal taste thing. The choice is up to you.

The one thing I will add though is that a static page allows you to control the backlinks AND the content on your home page.

So if you want to rank for the keyword "Internet Marketing Tips," you can get backlinks with that anchor text and have a static page that has the proper on page factors for "Internet Marketing Tips."

If you choose the rolling pages, then you most likely will not have perfect on page optimization all the time.

That's the only difference that I can think of...

Thanks co2. That is pretty much what I was thinking, r.e. content. With a static home page I can control the content and therefore keywords although I am not really looking to drive traffic to the homepage itself.
