Hey everyone,

A lot of us who are making money with Adsense sites throw around several terms that can be quite vague. I'd like to get your opinion and eliminate the gray area in these definitions.

How do you define each of the sites in the following list? Feel free to mention how many pages per site type, amount of backlinking, timeline, etc...

Types of Adsense Sites:

Micro Niche
Mini Niche
Mini Authority
Authority

Are there any others that I'm missing? Add 'em on!

You can't. Seriously, you can't define "authority" or "mini authority". Those terms are often used very loosely when trying to explain a concept/strategy, but there is no clear definition. A site is a site.

Micro Niche = Mini Niche = Mini Authority in my opinion.

A Micro/Mini niche site is a website targeting a specific niche. This site is small, an easy read, and very focused. Typically ranging from 3 to 10 pages in size, although this varies greatly on personal opinion.

An Authority Niche site is the same as a mini niche site but offers more content, and probably more personal interaction. A reader could get to know the blog owner/operator which they wouldn't on a mini niche site. There could be anywhere from 20 to 100 pages of content focusing on a specific niche.

Having a list of "Types of Adsense sites" doesn't make sense. You can put adsense on any site you want (within their tos). These are just "types of sites".

Thanks guys. I certainly don't need a list at all. I was just so used to seeing people throw these terms around that I wanted to have that cleared up.

Micro Niche = 5/10 page site, quite often with an EMD.
    Mini Niche = same thing
Mini Authority = well, an a smaller authority site!
Authority = Usually a site with at least 30+ pages covering a wide variety of different topics within one market/niche.

I don't think this definition is correct. "Authority" can be defined in many different ways. It could be a social site driven by user content alone, or a site that offers access to a resource that no other source can get their hands on. Doesn't have to be "big". No?

Every site is different... I'm guilty of categorizing sites this way myself, but now that I think about it, it doesn't make sense. How is my 100 page info site more authoritative than a 10 page site that hosts a specific set of docs/forms/similar resources that are highly valuable to some people (lets say in a specific niche).

Yep, good point bnetwork. I think in general though when people use these terms, that is what the majority of what people are referring to. That's just my opinion anyway.

Yeah, I agree. I'm sure, as with most things, you will get a hundred different definitions if you ask a hundred different people. I just thought it would be nice, as a community, to have some sort of benchmark for this stuff.

However, being able to define an authority site is a very interesting discussion. I guess it really comes down to how the visitors and search engines perceive the value of the site.

This is a really difficult question, and a interesting one.

It all depends on the viewpoint of each marketer how deep into micro-detail they want to go, and if there is any relevant traffic. It is impossible to exactly define the difference between a niche and a micro niche because you can almost always go deeper, and extract another level. Micro is not an exact measurement.

Some might for example say that "women's shoes" is a niche and that "high heel shoes" would be a micro niche.

Another marketer might call "high heel shoes" a niche while at the same time proposing "platform pumps" as a micro niche.

Another might see "platform pumps" as a pretty big niche, with each color or platform height, being micro-niches.

There is no real end to the micro level dissection. The limit is only practically imposed by whether there is any traffic left for the term.

In my book, niche and authority are 2 different things

Niche as in topic/subject/interest-group/what it is about
Authority as in depth/expertise/mass/footprint/how profound is the info

While I can hardly see myself going beyond say 10 pages for a micro-niche, I don't view niche or micro as definitions of page-count.

An authority site is defined by the impact it has, not by the number of pages and could probably have a single page if it gets the job done. But that would probably be a micro-niche-authority
