Blog or .com: which is better? And where are my links?

I've read tons of threads and posts about how to get started, but I still have a couple of questions if any of the experts want to clear them up. Thank you so much!:

-Is is better to have a blog site like blogspot.com or a regular .com site? Does it matter as long as the content is good? I ask because if I can do a blog instead of a .com, I'll save some money. Saving money is key for me right now. You'll know why in a minute.

-I have created one small blog and have submitted some articles, but do not see the backlinks on any checker I've tried. The site is indexed, but none of the links seem to exist. Is it too early? I've only created the site within the last couple of weeks.

-I don't have any keyword research tools other than GKT. I found a long tail keyword that gets 8,100 broad searches and 1,000 exact searches per month, the top few sites for the keyword have less than 30 sites linking in (the #1 site has only 2 sites linking to it, according to Alexa.com), and about 300,000 overall sites come up when I do a search for the keyword. I am trying a blog for this keyword to test all of the ideas in here.

Thank you so much for all your help. I am in a very tough spot. I've been laid off for almost two years from my main job and my fiance is now the primary breadwinner in our family. I desperately want to be able to get to the point where I can bring in about $3,000 a month, but I know that won't happen for quite a while. If I could get to just $$300 a month, I'd be ecstatic. I've read posts from XFactor and others who make it look easy, but I just want to try and eliminate as many dumb mistakes that could slow the process as possible. Any of you who have been in my shoes can appreciate this. Thank you so much again. I've never seen more generous people anywhere as I've seen in some of these threads.

If you can afford it, spring for your own domain ( .com, .net, .info etc etc ) and your own hosting account.

You can easily get the domain for about $10, and the hosting account for about the same per month.

It is always best to control your own site, which is why I suggest buying your own domain.

This of course is MY opinion, there are some that swear by the free domains and some that say to buy your own.

What I do is buy my own, and then use the free ones as supporting sites ( basically creating backlinks with them ).

Using GKT is just fine plenty of people do, nothing wrong with it. I would advise using SEO for Firefox to check out the competition, and use back link watch to check out the back links for your competition. Remember, your true competitors are the top 10, some might say the top 3.

As soon as you are making a bit of money REINVEST it back into your business. This will allow it to grow faster. And by reinvest I mean; buy some tools, outsource your backlinking or content writing etc etc.

To be honest, since you aren't working, you need to dedicate as much time as possible to grow this business. If you do that, you can succeed a lot faster.

Oh, and one last thing. TAKE LOTS OF ACTION!!
