Add more contents and high quality backlinks. Beating Wikipedia is just like beating other competitors, it's just tougher though. But as long as you update and build high quality backlinks consistently, you can definitely beat them.

Wikipedia is an authority site, Google trust them. But they don't build backlinks so beating them is not impossible.

  • Beating Wikipedia is not so difficult, I have seen many keywords ranking better than Wikipedia, follow the tip given by rhorobins and all the best.

Wikipedia ranks first because of its quality content. It makes a link bait and gets quality links for its site from the linking sites. Quality content and backlinks can make your site rank well.

Wikipedia doesn't build backlinks but huge amount of people link to it all the time,
so it's like spontaneous link building. You need higher quality backlinks than they get.

The question that really needs to be asked is WHY?????

If your offer is of a commercial nature, Wikipedia won't matter, because its informational.

    ....sheesh.

      agree if it's commercial.

It would be good if the op finds a way to be included in that wikipedia page as one of the references..

What's the point of outranking Wikipedia? It's not your competitor.

Other sites targetting the same keyword as you should be your focus.

In my experience you will never outrank it anyway because a) it's a massive site with loads of original content (added daily) and b) users link to it so its running link juice on auto-pilot.

You need to understand that Wikipedia don't do link building for their web pages. They rank just because of natural link building and I think most people also don't give much importance to the anchor text of the link.

You can surely beat Wikipedia. Just analyze the number of backlinks of that web page and yours too so you can understand how many more links you need to beat them.

Keep building quality links and you will beat Wikipedia.

For sites like Wikipedia, checking external backlinks isn't going to get you far.

Wiki, doesn't build a single page & rank that single page. Wiki builds a lot of pages on the same subject/keyword/s, that's why most times you'll see wiki ranking multiple pages for the same [exact] keyword.

Even If you don't see multiple pages ranked for a single keyword, wiki will still boost a ranked page with relevant internal pages. A lot of wiki image pages alone are PR5-6, which they use for boosting relevant pages.

Wiki has a few tricks up their sleeve, for ranking pages, you just have to reverse engineer what they are doing.

It's those additional internal wiki pages doing most of the work.

I never able to bit Wikipedia. I don't know, whether any one of you did that. I think, Wikipedia remains in top because of the quality of contents it provides. It also holds a good amount of quality back links. To stay in competition with Wikipedia, you have to work hard for the content quality.

Wikipedia doesn't rank #1 just because of content quality for these many terms.

It ranks also because of (a) its domain age, (b) its authority, (c) its external backlink profile including the diversity and power of the sources and (d) the sheer number of pages inside it with awesome internal links.

So, beating them is a challenge. Keep doing the right set of things and hope for the best.

Overtaking a Wikipedia page is tough, but it has been done countless times. Keep working on links (with caution) and you will make it.
