Do you build around a niche or a keyword?

I'm curious about the philosophies around this. Do you start with a niche and find keywords for it? Or do you start with a keyword then look for related niches?

I look for the niche first. Then I try to build for long-tail keywords and then ultimately go for bigger keywords.

Yep, go look for a niche first and then search for good keywords. You'll get lost otherwise :-)

I look for a niche and then dig deep. Start big and narrow down via keywords.

I've got a favourite niche, and I usually try and find keywords in that niche.

Sometimes I get distracted and start finding keywords first, but that's very rare.

Interesting. In the past I've read the opposite. Find out what people are looking for first by way of keywords, then find a niche which provides the answer that people are looking for.

It's not really an either/or question.

By researching keywords, you are generally already looking within a niche.

    The two standard approaches are:

    1. Find a product/service to promote and then find suitable keywords.

    2. Find good keywords and then find an appropriate product/service to promote

Niche first, keywords best associated to that niche afterwards... but it depends too I suppose. If you are looking to build an adsense type content site, and you don't know what niche to pick but instead, are looking for one with profitable keywords, you may do the keyword research first, find something you're looking for or that catches your eye, and go from there. So in that instance, it may be keyword first, then niche. Just my thoughts.

You find a niche first. Your niche defines what kinds of products you promote: dating, weight loss, video games and so on. Once you have found a profitable niche, you can the decide on your approach. You might decide to create a authority niche site with a more general url related to your niche so that you can promote tons of products (what I prefer).

On the other hand, you could decide to create a micro-niche website using an exact-match domain on which you promote a particular product. For me, the determining factor would be the size of the niche.

I typically start with a niche and find keywords within that niche to target. It seems a lot easier for me to do that than finding the keyword first.
