Google testing No more Automatic Ten Results on First Page

In what appears to be a new test at Google on some results Google is limiting what appears on the front page so as to present the user only with the most relevant searches even if it does not equal top ten. Take a look at this one

Very limited to some results not a major change just a test but thing about it is that this makes sense for Google. Present less results on the front page and you would probably increase click throughs on the adwords. So even if you are placed 8th but Google doesn't find you particularly relevant they could bounce you to the second page.

Wow nice find Mike. That is so bizarre. On page 2 the numbers are still there and showing the site at the top of page two as #11. That #11 is also at the bottom of page 1 in position #6. I guess there will be some big winners and big losers with this new set up.

In fairness not my find. there have been some write ups on it and the searches that are being used for the test. I wouldn't think much of it catching on except that with Google now showing some Google plus results in some adword spots it would free up more advertising space for Google on the front page. The economic reasons are there.

Buggy right now though as you suggested. I get weird displays on subsequent pages.

Ramifications would be pretty bad if you are ranked say 6 or lower. Would make some interesting challenges for front page placement services as well. Bright side is it would make click through rates better for those of us who advocate getting top 4 ranking.

Not exactly an algo change but it does underline how things can change even without one. Best bet is one of those is coming around soon as well.

I'm surprised this thread isn't getting more traction.

Just another wonderful way that Google is throwing its muscle around trying to kill traditional SEO. Soon we'll all be buying PPC ads if we want to have any exposure, which is exactly what Google wants.

I know I'm being a little extreme. But it's not entirely impossible.
