How does having a "Post" as the homepage on your site rather than a "Page" as your homepage on your site affect your sites SEO search rankings, if at all?

It doesn't. Post and page are just two different methods of managing your content.

Some plugins for Wordpress only work on pages or posts. Pages have no tags and categories but that isn't important if it's used as your homepage post.

More info in this thread for example:

If the post is "sticky" it does not really make much of a difference. For SEO purposes, it is usually a page with your main key words, and the "post" with supporting that page by anchor text links and of course content.

this is also performed by categories some times. A lot of "experts" say not to use the category method because of fear of being penalized for having duplicate content. I have not found this so.

    Examples:
    site title: "Whats for Diner"
Home page: "Whats for diner" (whatsfordiner.c0m)
Whats for diner? That is the question that all moms hear over and over...bla,bla,bla.

    supporting post
title: "Whats for Diner- Lamb Chops" (whatsfordiner.c0m/whats-for-diner-lamb-chops)
Whats for Diner? "Lamb Chops". Lamp chops have been a favorite for our family ever since the kids had teeth. So when I hear whats for diner (link the whats to diner to your home page)they are pleased to hear "lamb chops.....bla,bla,bla

you would have 3 to 5 post this way all linking to that main keyword "page"

Then you start on the next main keyword. So you make another "page"
page title "whats for supper" (whatsfordiner.c0m/whats-for-supper/
    Whats for Supper, bla,bla,bla

post title: "whats for Supper-Chicken Nuggets (whatsfordiner.c0m/whats-for-supper-chicken-nuggets/
then write the post with an anchor text "whats for supper" linking back to the " (whatsfordiner.c0m/whats-for-supper-chicken-nuggets/" page and on and on

    I hope this helps

Yeah, this makes a lot of sense Mike.
I think I can keep it a lot simpler in my mind by focusing on a page with posts.

      Thanks,

There's no SEO difference. As Maraun says, they're just two different ways to "display" your content. SEO rules are the same regardless.

      JS,

Two different ways to display the content seems to make sense, however "sticky" seems to be an operative word for this subject. What is your opinion on that? (see arnold55 post)

      Thanks,

    Agree with arnold55.

if the post or page is "sticky" it does not matter a lot. the most important is that for which keywords you want to rank for in search engines.

if those keywords are on "Page", have it as your homepage and , if those keywords are in "Post" make it as homepage.

But "Post" as homepage is recommended by many SEO experts

Why is "post" as a homepage recommended for SEO purposes? I think this is what got me confused in the beginning. Hence, this thread.

      Thanks,

      Cresad,

Between you and arnold55, "sticky" seems to be a variable. Can you tell me what the difference would be if a page or post is not sticky? What would be the affect then?

The only real difference is that having recent posts on your front page may slightly increase indexing, as the homepage is often the most crawled page on a site.

I don't believe there is a different but I think there is a plugin that will convert posts to pages and vice versa if you are concerned about it

Hmmm, that's interesting... I think I will have to check that out. As long as my site isn't too big, this would probably do the trick if needed.

If you know the name of the plugin, please send it to me.

      Thanks,

It actually doesn't differs a lot. The highest difference i have seen is- posts have higher indexing and crawling permission(80%) than pages(20%) in wordpress xml sitemap generator plugin.

I think SEO wise adding content in either ways give you same benefit.
If I were you I would have gone for page... Home pages are usually static and rarely gets changed so its better to make it a standalone page.
