Both domains in your signature are .com ones. Oh, well.
If I was Google, I'd probably first and foremost trust a website that's hosted in Australia and has a .com.au domain to be relevant to Australia.

An Australian address on the site and geographically-marked keywords in the title/description (for example, "swiss watch Sindney") would definitely help as well.

It would also help if you had a G+ Local listing with an address in Australia.

As for backlinks, plenty of recommendations have been provided on how to build geographically-marked backlinks in this thread, so, I'm not going to repeat that.

Go to webmaster tools and follow the below steps

    Site Configuration->Settings->Geographic Target->Australia.

This helps you to rank your site well in google.com.au

Agree with above stated strategy and try your link building on both key phrase using Australian web site such as forums, directory, business directory, and other classified promotions.

The more links you can get from .com.au sites, the better. And don't forget the Australian directories, as well! And, of course, as others have mentioned, use the webmaster tools settings on Google to set your site to Australia. Using these techniques should help improve your Google.com.au rankings.

What evidence do you have that this makes any difference? I have not seen it make any difference.

Obviously if your site gets more links from local sites (in this case local being Australia) it is seen as also being a local site.

I've got international sites and try to get 50%+ local links. They all rank very well this way.

ghazia is correct, but you need to create regional based link building in order to get ranking in Google.com.au. You need to create links of Australian domains to get ranking in local search engine.

Google uses 3 main signals to geotarget a website; they seem to weight them differently and do change the weighting from time to time; and its different from country to country:

    1. Settings in WMT
    2. TLD
    3. Server location

As long as you continue to host the sites in the USA, you have an uphill battle to rank well in Australia

It's pretty simple really. Currently you have virtually no backlinks to your sites (0 in Majestic SEO and 5 or 6 according to ahrefs).

You are never going to get a site to rank without backlinks.

Is the website hosted in AUS? If not, then consider putting it on an Australian server. I had a site ranking really well in AU and bad in US, then I realised it was on my Australian server. I moved it to my US server and it immediately jumped up the US rank and dropped on AU.

I don't know if setting the Webmaster tools location has the exact same effect?

    Hi there,
You might want to give this a try:

    Get targated backlinks forom com.au
Get targated twitter followers from Aus and tweet your links
Get you linkedin profile and share content with the audiance from Aus
Get your facebook fan page and share your offers and links with your targated keywords ( All from com.au)

    Offline marketing:

Share flyers, booklet and leaflet to Aus region : canberra, sydney, adelade and other areas and see what happens ( This might be costly )

But surely online + offline might be the way to go with the business.

    Best wishes,
    Swrajit
