I understand that 404 not found crawl errors are bad for seo. So the correct thing to do is a 301 redirect right? That being said. Would using this plugin work the same way as a 301 redirect or should I go ahead and redirect using the htaccess file so that google sees it as an actual redirect?

I'm afraid google will have a page indexed and then this wp plugin will redirect it to the new page and google might see it as duplicate content.

The correct thing to do would be to remove the error page.

No. Google automatically deindexes anything that has a redirect on it. It considers the content to be permanently moved and thus not duplicate.

You are fine to use this.

that plugin is exactly what you want.

a 301 redirect tells google that a page has permanently moved.

404 errors aren't bad though. sometimes you get them from people or bots randomly searching for common pages. nothing to worry about.

Having 10 or 20 Not found pages is a normal thing and do not harm in any way. But sometimes it become an issue if you have hundreds of 404s. There may be some programming error behind this, you need to look for that cause and then fix the issue.

Sending all the 404s to a specific page is not a good idea. What if someone mistyped about a product or article and land on a Quite different page (due to 301). If the plugin can handle the conditional redirection it is fine otherwise you should look for some other alternative.

I'm not personally familiar with the plugin, but it looks to add 301 redirects which is what you need in this case. Redirect the 404 pages to new pages or your homepage and recapture any linkjuice they had.

Thanks for all the great info! I just purchased a premium theme from themeforest and my site has 171 css errors and 1,500 css warnings. Is that normal? I'm guessing it's because the theme has so many customization options and they are all listed on the css but most are not being used. Is that the case? Is this a bad thing?
