Ranking #1 from 36mil competitors with DUPLICATE CONTENT???

Guys, I'm not kidding... Here's the thing:

I've been targeting this specific 2-word keyphrase for the past year (jumping from page 2-4 constantly) and regularly check the competition.

Last month I saw a guy ranking #6 for this keyphrase. His site has ONE page only! No contact page, no "about us" or anything else for that matter.

Not only this, but he has 3 texts copied from other sites as follows:

"texttexttexttexttexttexttexttexttexttexttext
texttexttexttexttexttexttexttexttexttexttext
texttexttexttexttexttexttexttexttexttexttext

-text borrowed from wwwdotwhateverdotcom.

texttexttexttexttext.....

-text borrowed from wwwdotwhatever2dotcom.

texttexttexttexttext.....
-text borrowed from http://www.whatever3.com"

Today (just now) I see this guy is in #1 slot! I read a LOT of SEO guides, I've probably read every new guide out there in order to keep up with what's happening in the world of SEO today.

In almost every guide I see "Google HATES duplicate content!".

Now PLEASE explain this to me??

How did he do this with:
A. A thin content site (ONE page only)
B. By ONLY having 3 copied texts, NO ORIGINAL CONTENT

Google hates duplicate content if it was all on the same site. Google does not care if the duplicate content is on different sites (otherwise competitors can just set up a ton of sites with duplicate content to derank your site)

I've seen all sorts of weird stuff at the top of the SERPS. Pages that have a few hacked backlinks from top .EDU sites, for example. That seems to go on all the time. Sites that have hidden redirects (from elsewhere) passing some sort of juice to them to push them right to the top for some competitive keywords.
One that I'd been tracking for the past three years has now, finally, been exposed and ousted from the SERPS. But, hey, we're dealing with criminal gangs here now. Some of this stuff goes above and beyond BLUEFART. I'm not surprised by anything any more. And all the more disturbed by the amount of crap showing up in my stats from russia, ex-eastern bloc countries and china.

Google does indeed hate duplicate content, but it sucks at determining which site copied from which, so it often ranks sites that are plagiarizing above the sites that originally wrote the content.

You people need a dose of reality.

Google does not hate duplicate content.

People just go butt over backwards on the mere mention
      of duplicate content.

Plenty of sites use duplicate content. Even across
multiple pages on THE SAME SITE!!!!!

My gosh people, do you ever actually read what google
prints? Or just cargo-on silly stuff?

When someone refers to duplicate content, it is assumed they mean across multiple sites (plagiarism) and Google does hate plagiarism. Of course many sites have the same content on multiple pages; that's what the link rel canonical tag is for...
