Broad Match – indicates the number of searches made where all the words in the keyword term are present in the search query.

Exact Match – indicates the number of searches made that only include the words shown and in the right order.

When doing keyword research using the Adwords Keyword Tool, use “Exact” as the Match Type to get the real results

Ok thanks It is quite a long targeted keyword/phrase so can I expect to pretty much rank for broad match if that makes sense. In other words mostly get broad match search visits rather than just exact? Theres low competition

I have used Broad to get a big picture but you truly have to use Exact to get super targeted on your niche.

Just make sure when you're buying domains you go for "exact." Early in my career I bought a whole bunch of domains before I knew there was a difference and I bought based on "broad." I'm still bitter about that!

Well, I can chalk up some domains as a "waste" now, dang!

So, having multiple keywords in a domain from a "broad" search is still effective, but not as effective as a "exact". So, if did broad and typed in

          top speakers

Now, speakers comes up xx,xxx times. But with exact, only shows a fraction. Having speakers in the domain is still good though, but not as good right?

          For example,

topspeakersonline.com..google would still see "speakers" and throw it towards page 1, over a website without "speakers" in the domain name.

Now, if exact was "best speakers online" and I got the domain name "bestspeakeersonline.com", I know I'd be golden right?

say for example i typed in black guitars into adwords

for broad that gets for eg 24 000 monthly
but for exact it gets only 1000

yet if I do all my seo for black guitars can i not expect to be getting closer to 24 000 possible visitors? rather than 1000

Short answer is you will get closer to 1000 visitors (actually, it will be less than that because even if you rank #1 on Google, the CTR is around 40%, although you will also pick up some long tail traffic)

The reason you won't pick up anywhere near the 24000 visitors, is that the broad match for black guitars will cover a large range of topics that your site won't be optimized for.

You only need to go as far as the first page on Google to see that there are many sites that aren't targeting 'black guitars' directly.

For example, the 4th result (for me) is called "Black Machine", then there is a Wikipedia entry at #7 titled "Old Black".

That's the reason why broad match is called 'broad', as it covers such a broad area.

Wow, so I went back to look at exact matchs for some "good" domain names I had. The best one I found had 8,100 views. It's an affiliate site, so I'm going to press on. The items I am promoting don't go for less than $500, and average is $1200, so if I can get a few hundred my way, get 8-10% to buy, I can still make a few hundred a month. So glad I saw this post. Warrior forum is awesome

Broad will show you 1 million searches a month, so you get super excited, get the domain and hosting and build the site. Soon, your site is on page 1, but you don't see any visitors. Then you post one of these on Warrior Forum and learn what exact searches are.
Then ... sigh ... you start over ...

At least that's how I got started.

Broad match : Broad match is the default situation when using this Keyword Tool. What broad match means is that Every time any fraction of the keyword shows up in a search phrase, that data obtains added to the reported whole searches per month.

Exact match : The volume of searches returned when ensuring particular match keywords is easily for only that single keyphrase. So there are no comprehensive involved, it's only the total number of searches for now that particular phrase, typed exactly into Google, with no other word included.

Broad match IMO is basically useless

Lets say you are targeting Blue Guitars

Broad match will pick that out of other phrases searched for,
    if you choose "broad"

    Example Google sees
    Cheap Guitars with Blue fretboards............bingo....match
    Black and Blue Guitars.............................bingo ...match
Guitar music under the Blue Sky................bingo....match

It grabs ANYTHING that could possibly include "blue" and "guitar" and groups it together into one huge number. ..........in other words the results it brings up
for "broad" match . is useless for what you are targeting

Exact match LOCAL, is the settings you should use

Outwest, following on from your example, the following are also broad matches.

The driver was pulled out of the lake with his body all blue. The police found his guitar hidden in the bushes.

The painting was vibrant with hues of blue and red. Some of the other modern art included a guitar shaped like a toilet.

A guitar could be heard in the far distance while the setting sun cast blue shadows over the landscape.

While the above examples are a little silly, it demonstrates just how diverse a broad match result can be.
