I am using a free Wordpress theme on my websites and am wondering what I can do to improve on page SEO?

I have heard there are plugins that can help. Can anyone recommend the best way to go?

How so? I"m not disagreeing with you, just curious. I am currently using Yoast, but was contemplating on downloading Google XML Stemaps.

One of the first things I would do would be to thoroughly examine the theme your using to determine if that theme is leaking your SEO juice, by linking behind your back, some sneaky themes, can actually be building a backlink to other websites, one of the best investments I ever made was in purchasing a premium theme, that is developed and maintained, huge advantage over my competition.

The best way to build SEO value in a website is to create the kind of unique and valuable content that people want to see and use on a regular basis.

It just works, better than any thing I have used or tried in the past, content works like a magnet, to build traffic and backlinks.

You can also easily remove any links, by using the search function (ctrl+f) and going through the code of the theme. Make sure to back up your files first and don't touch things which you have no idea about.

Yoast provides more options in my opinion, but if you know on page SEO your brain is better than any plugin, its just there to make sure you make no mistakes. I think any sitemap is the same file and you can submit multiple subcategories produced by Yoast SEO into the webmaster tools.

      Good luck,

How do I get the sitemap to show up on my homepage? Is it better to do so? Because currently I have the yoast plugin activated, but it doesn't show up on my homepage when viewing the site.

Yoast SEO plugin is the best one out there in my opinion, excellent combination of features and ease of use. You can get very detailed if you want or you can "set it and forget it".

Another vote for Yoast from me - I find it the easiest and least intrusive one to work with.

The page analysis tab gives lots of page specific SEO help - well worth checking out.

I use to use yoast and all-in-seo plugins. But, it really helps on ranking as far as that that helps to setup on-page SEO and that really helps.
