Have you noticed that sometimes you post a comment on a blog and it doesn't show up? I'm not talking about a message saying that "your comment is awaiting moderation". I'm talking about poof, abra-cadabra where the **** is my comment type of problem.

It seems that Akismet has got you with your hand in the cookie jar!

What is Akismet?

Akismet is a powerful tool to block spam comments on a blog. It comes pre installed on Wordpress blogs and if it flags your site as spam you lose the ability to make any comments with the URL that was blocked.

Lets backtrack for a moment...

I'm relatively new to Internet marketing and when I build a few sites I was looking for ways to promote it. So what did I do? I went to various forums to look for ways to promote my site. I even posted some newbie style questions like "what is the best way to promote my sites". Left, right and center I got answers like find do follow blogs and blogs are the best method etc. On occasion I got some members saying don't spam the blogs which I took to heart and actually left useful comments on blogs.

After a few months of doing this I did notice my site ranking increase in the SERPs but then I found it increasingly difficult to find blogs where my comments would appear. It seems that my site has been flagged by Aksimet! I've send them a request to lift the ban and will see what happens.

Why am I posting this?

Simple, just to warn my fellow members who have given me so much input in the past few months. Try to make your blogs posts as extremely useful as possible and even then you still risk getting blocked so JUST BE CAREFUL.

Let me clarify something for you. First of all Akismet does not block your ability to make comments with a certain URL.

Here is what can happen if you are reported by too many blog owners to Akismet as being spam then it will eventually label your url as spam that much is correct. However it does not block your comment all together. It will still be held in a spam que and the blog owner can go into the spam que and approve the comment if he wishes.

Now obviously this is not the best scenario. If you are flagged as spam by Akismet then it means that a number of people have reported you comments as spam. This isn't likely to just happen on accident so I would take a close look at your comments and ask yourself a few questions.

1 Did you actually read the post and leave comments that added value to the post or topic at hand? (answer should be yes)
2 Did you leave brief comments that add no value to the post at hand. (answer should be no)
3 Were you overly self promotions and/or did you leave extra links in your comments. (answer should be no)

The main point here being if you are getting a high number of people marking yopur comments as spam then it likely has something to do with the way you are commenting so take a close and honest look at that first.

PS: some people also feel that leave keywords anchor text instead of your actual names comes across as spammy so that is one other thing to consider. (however I think most blog owners are willing to allow the keyword as anchor text if you actually leave a thoughful comment that adds to the post) If you leave a brief comment and have keyword anchor text as your name you can bet your are going to get the spam hammer quite often.

    I hope that helps.

Thanks for your thorough response. While I didn't leave spammy comments, I did go to certain blogs and make comments on numerous posts (sometimes I just went to the archive and go through the posts).

If I knew this could happen I wouldn't have done it this way. I send an e-mail to Akismet support to see if I can do anything about it.

With all the forum talk about posting on blogs is the best way to build links, I can imagine that a lot of people experience this problem.
