Wordpress. Will PostID permalinks still work if I change?

I've been reading a lot about changing permalink structure, and I'd like to change the structure to include the post title.

Something that I read recently suggested that the current shortlink format (./?p=622) would still work after I change the permalink structure.

If this is the case, that would be great as I would not lose rank, or introduce 404's, but any future posts would assume the new structure.

Can anybody confirm that this is the case? I'm really on the fence about changing the structure, but if external and internal links will still work when referencing the shortlink format, that will make the decision for me.

Thanks in advance!

You should have 301 redirect from the old URL to the new. Duplicate content is not good, and to be absolutely on the safe side, it wouldn't hurt to use canonical meta tag also, which would point to the new URL.

Install pretty link and set up a forwarding from all your old ?p=1234 type links to the new type. That way you won't lose anything.

Or I suppose you could do it the other way around, but that ? syntax is kind of fail anyway.

You don't need a plugin. Just make the change. The ?p=123 links will automatically 301 to the new structure.

Wordpress does this by default, plus it's actually part of the shortlink feature. Now you would only need a plugin, if you wanted to go from one "fancy" permalink strucuture to another.
