What's the current state with article directories, backlinks and google ranking

Hey everyone,

So I am relatively new to IM and I planned to implement a back linking strategy that are mentioned by people such as Pat Flynn and others on this forum.

So the idea being you create one unique article, spin it to create 20 articles, then submit these articles to article directories / social media sites / other websites with links to your site.

However browsing the forums it seems this might not work as it once did.

- Am I right in saying that these article directory back links don't work as well as they used to?

- Am I right in saying that certain back links are more powerful than others (Such as a back link from a youtube video as opposed to an article directory back link - As in quality over quantity)

- Is there any information I can read up on concerning any changes in the utility of back links?

Any info on this area would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

    Yes.

Some people blame the "Panda updates" for that, but actually it didn't work at all well for quite a few years before that, either.

Just don't try to use article directories for their own backlinks. That isn't what they're there for, and they've never been of much value, and they're getting worse all the time.

On "article directories", this post will help you, if you follow its various links: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post5068872

On "spinning", this will do the same: http://www.warriorforum.com/adsense-...ml#post5742984

On "the utility of backlinks", possibly this post, this post and this little thread might help.

It's possible that the moderators may feel that your question, even though it relates to article directories, is "an SEO question" and should be elsewhere, and if the thread disappears, that'll probably be why: "just saying". If that happens and you want to repost it, I'd try the SEO forum (but you may get completely different answers there!).

Excellent reply thank you so much! I shall check out the sources you have posted!

Hopefully they won't take it down all together... if it gets moved to the correct place then that's cool and apologies if this is in the wrong section.

      ** EDIT **

I just read a lot of information there and I can not thank you enough. All I can say is that it's good that I set out to make websites that solve a problem / create an opportunity, as the content I have planned for these sites should be suited for syndication.

I do have some questions though.

So mass submitting to article directories for their back link juice is a bad idea. Does that mean that when searching for niche markets / keywords, that market samurai is practically useless? I was using it before to see how many back links a site has for a keyword before determining whether to create a site for it. However if it depends on the quality of the backlinks, then how can to determine whether a keyword is competitive or not?

Thanks again Alexa, I shall continue my research on the area.

The spinning of article depends upon the spinner that you choose for. All spinners dont do well. Almost majority of them.

Browsing forums is quite difficult unless one chooses customized search and chooses discussions. So, this way very few people would prefer it.

Find out the viral importance of Media that can be very useful in nearest future. For example: "Pinterest" is the talk of the town these days.

Don't make assumptions on too much without trying yourself mate. If you want to spin articles, get a trial of a spinner and have a go so you can actually see how it works. The more you understand the better off you will be.

Spinning with "the best spinner" or "spinner chief" isnt to make readable content that is going to generate traffic. If you are using a spinner, you are doing so to create unique content to embed links into, thats it.

People who complain that spinning is stupid and the articles dont make sense dont understand what they are supposed to be use for then, its as simple as that.

If you want READABLE spins of one article, you need to do it by hand. Its the only way trust me. I have tried to get spinners to make readable content and its just a waste of time, you can never get it to work 100% and the sentences never read properly.

Article networks do work, but you cant just rely on article submissions to get you ranking and stay there. They should be a part of your back linking strategy, but not the only thing.

You also need to decide if you want to back link to get you up in the rankings in Google, or you want the back links to bring traffic. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

    Good luck mate.

Article Directories and sites do work today also...but only from mass backlinks angle.
