Keyword Research for Hunting Blog

I want to create an authority North American hunting blog that will not only talk about everything hunting, but highlight the latest hunting and outdoors products and have a "Trip of the Week" section which will highlight a new hunting trip every week.
I'm typically pretty strong at keyword research for mini-niche sites like Amazon aff. sites and so forth but I've become stumped on this one. I want to target relevant strong monthly local search traffic but not have to wait years to get on page 1.
I also don't know whether to try to keyword optimize my URL or try to brand it instead. I assume branding myself would be preferred since I'm trying to establish myself as an authority.
Can someone help me out with my KW research a bit and recommend which keywords would be worthwhile?
