Severe loss of ranking after changing host and cannot find out why????

I've just been forced to change hosting company from an extremely poor service delivered by justhost.com in the US to a UK based service at vidahost. I only wish i had read the real reviews on the service from justhost and the amounts of server crashes and slowing they had before i went for them.

Anyway I had 3 seperate accounts/domains over at justhost which I transferred over to my new single account UK server along with the domain reg's.

Thing is now out of the two money sites I have one:

www.steamshowersupply.co.uk

has completely kept all its rankings, and I'm pritty sure a couple of keywords have gone up due to the improved speed and location

Though another site, which is older than the first and ranked #1 in google:

www.steamshowerinstallation.co.uk

has dropped to page 2 for the most searched terms (steam shower, steam showers) and completely gone for most our seconary words (steam bath, hot tub, whirlpool bath)

the thing is because this was just a straight transfer, so nothing has changed set up wise, there was no downtime ECT and the fact that the other site has kept ranking I'm really struggling to find why this has happened????

I wondered if anyone else has every experienced this fall when changing host?????

    It's called a domain drop.

If your site stops being hosted for any period of time, the domain is labeled dropped.

I imagine sometime during your transfer Google crawled your site and didn't find anything while you were updating, so they marked it as dropped, then you updated it and it came back.

If this is wrong then I am not sure what it is.

be strange as the site was fully transferred over before the domain was moved and reg moved. The thing that is making my tug my balls off is the fact that the other site has lost no ranking at all and both have been built of the same backlink methods exept the one that has dropped out is a year older, so even with the recent Panda update this is doing my head in

If it was a case of google searching the site whilst it was in transition, is it a case that google has to refind all the links poiting to the domain??? any idea if the site will climb back up the rankings

My first thought is that your website got crawled during the transfer, but there again it's just speculation. Never transferred websites yet, but from what I heard from people of my community, this does happen sometimes and no, it doesn't touch all transferred websites. Your best bet would be to wait a few weeks, perhaps 2-3 and see if your ranking are back. From what I can read it seems like it just happened, so even though it's hard to just sit and do nothing, definitely give it a few weeks before making any conclusion!

  • Your rankings dropped in US or UK?
If its in US then it is normal. Its because google check host location. It gave more credit to websites those are hosted in local area.

I assumed the OPs sites were hosted in the UK with Justhost and in the UK with the new host.

Perhaps the new host is slower. Google does take site speed into consideration when determining rankings.

      I see then.

The OP's sites seem to be catering to a UK audience, so it makes no sense that rankings would drop based on moving from a US to a UK host.

The problem could be something else that is coincidental and totally unrelated to the hosting.

        Why does that make sense?

Exactly the opposite would make sense, ie an improvement in the UK rankings, surely?

I'm sure it will bounce back, matey.

It could be possible it wasn't resolving while Google tried to crawl it.

ok boys i'll sit tight another week. Been around two weeks since transfer so site should have been crawled since a few times. If no change i'll let you know........be weird if this ws the case as the site was full moved over before the domain to ensure no loss of service

It's interesting this. To be honest, the only thing that I can think of is that your new hosting is slower.

We are told that google rewards server location so I would have expected a rankings improvement in the UK when moving the site from the US.

I'm particularly interested because I am/was about to move my .co.uk sites from two US vps accounts to a fasthosts reseller account!

I would be very interested to know if and when thiings do bounce back for you, Andrew!

      Good luck!

na new host is absolutely so much faster than previous, the reason why i moved was server slowness and crashing issue which lead to active complaints from my customers it was that bad.............

I just wondered if your site re-gained its ranking. I am looking at vidahost right now.

    Many thanks
