The Future of SEO - What Advice to Give for Newbies?

I am not sure about this (I am not an SEO expert) but would like to open to the floor so we can start preparing ourselves for the next Panada updates. Now, BMR has closed its doors on new members and there are rumors that says that Google is watching the private blog networks very closely.

Also, the new Algo updates are focusing more on quality content and less on PR backlinks (especially for non relevant sites). Bottomline, user experience is key to Google.

So what are the methods, techniques or ways you guys have to get higher quality backlinks? Personally, I am also looking for a new and easier way out if BMR ever falls. Needing a backup plan soon.

build quality sites - keeps the users on your site longer which lowers your bounce rate. think about it, is there any other better indicator for Google that your site is a quality site than how long the user stays on your site or whether or not they hit the back button and look for more results?

keep up with the latest Google changes - For example, the "ads above the fold" update caught webmasters by surprise and many were scrambling to figure out why they lost rankings. They made stupid, uninformed guesses that hurt their rankings even more.

I was about to flame this rumor into the ground but then I thought about the show Numb3rs. (fairly good show btw, I give it 6.5/10)

In Numb3rs, this guy uses math to help solve all kinds of different FBI cases so I'm thinking with all the money Google has, I'm pretty sure they've looked into all these spinning programs and reverse engineered them so they'll be able to see with high percentages if the article has been spun or not.

Personally, I don't spin or rewrite articles but if I did, I wouldn't dare touch any spinning software. I would manually re-write if I absolutely HAD to but my philosophy is this: Just write a new article. By the time you've manually rewritten the article, you could have written a fresh, brand new one or maybe 2.

it's all about quality these days....social media popularity is having more and more impact on seo now as well. there is not any single quick fix to top rankings any more...it's all about having natural looking links and with varied anchor text and varied sources. the days of spinning articles are long gone....

The biggest issue I see today with most new SEO starters is the lack of onsite optimization. This is very important because if you figure you are creating thousands of backlinks to this page, each backlink will benefit in the algorithm from a better page and you only have to fix that page once. W3C Validation, quick loading times, removing styling, not using flash and as little javascript as possible, site structure, headline tags, rel="nofollow" linking, placing images with no SEO benefit on CSS and things like that will go a long way.

Look at Wikipedia & how they build their pages & you'll stop worrying about Google updates.

I mean really look at their pages, source code, internal linking, etc..., they got it going on...

One of the biggest things I see on the net is that so many pages are so close too getting it right, then they drop the ball with on-page SEO.

The problem with social media is that it takes too long. Most newbies would give up after a week. I don't think its viable if you have tens or hundreds of niche sites, but for business startups and such I think social media is especially crucial.

I agree with this. Most people just don't bother with on page SEO.
