How to rank higher in Google Places

When I rank for something like California Laywer in Google Places and I'm at spot #5

Will my Google Places listing rank higher when I build more links with this anchor txt to my webpage that ranks there? Or is it more dependant on number of positive reviews, x stars, links to the google places page?

      completely agree - get reviwes, try adding a link to your places page from their email footer, I've had some success doing that in the past.

    I really do not believe that reviews play that big of a role. I have customers with zero reviews ranking #1. Citations are far more important, and normal SEO. If the site performs better, so will the Places listing.

    I just did the linkbuilding as normal and I now ranked my clients website at #1 in the Google Places listing, before I started the seo campaign he was at #6.

        Yeah to the main website, not to the Google Places Map url. It took a while to get him at #1 (well 3 weeks lol), but at first sight I thought Google Places listing for the keyword needed a different approach but apparantly not.

    My standard answer is to continue building quality backlinks. Personally, I tend to shy away from low quality backlinks because want to focus more on the quality ones.
