Is Having Google Analytics/Webmaster Tools on Your Site a Bad Idea?

I know that there isn't a definitive yes or no answer to this, I just want people's opinions on something I've heard quite a bit about in my time in online marketing.

The argument is that when Google has access to all of your site's analytics, they know how long people spend on your site, click through rates, etc.; basically information which can be used to measure the quality of a site, particularly against another site in the same niche.

So Google can look at Site A and Site B in a particular niche and recognize that Site B boasts better stats than Site A and therefore must be of greater quality and therefore deserves to rank above Site A. Even without directly comparing two sites, they can take this into consideration when grading and ranking a site.

Without giving Google access to this data, they don't have that extra factor to weave into their Algo. (Just offering this side of the argument)

Some webmasters have made note that some of their sites which have these tools set up perform worse than other sites of theirs without it with most everything else being equal. That being said there are too many factors in SEO to ever narrow it down like this.

I know there is no definite answer one way or the other but it's something I finally decided to make a post about and present to other marketers here, so I'd love to get some thoughts.

I've been doing internet marketing for almost a year now. I've had Google Analytics since day 1 and I have a couple of keywords that are on the first page of Google, and one of them as ranked 1.

I really don't see how analytics can be a problem. I also use Google Adsense, and I think that alone Google already has access to that data. Heck, I'm ranking on GOOGLE's search engine. I'm not going to blame this or that on why my sites are not ranking.

The only person to blame is myself if anything were to get "flagged" or whatever.

If it's an Adsense site it doesn't matter, they already know more about your traffic than anyone else does.

Now If I was running a private backlink network, I wouldn't be running anything Google related.

BTW, GA has awesome data for individual Adsense pages.

Running one, but not using one right?

Yukon is right. If you have Adsense already, then it really doesn't matter.

If you are following Google's Guidelines, you also have nothing to worry. In fact, being WMT verified can only be a positive if you're following the guidelines.

Google does not use GA data except in aggregate. And you can opt yourself out of all data sharing if you choose to.

Correction: Google SAYS they don't use the info that way. But they have the info, and processing information is their business.

Remember that story a while back where a google employee hacked into women's facebook pages by extracting their passwords from their gmail? Obviously that particular example gains google nothing, but hiring an independent contractor to rank sites, giving them access to your database, and then asking no questions gains them $$$$$$$$.

If you're attempting to play by the rules with your money sites than having analytics on your money sites should be fine. If anything it will just show google that you care. Personally, I install adsense but rarely look at it.. there are better tools out there but I figure I'm already in bed with Google, so I may as well send her flowers.

I would avoid giving Google any info if you can. I had a clients site attached to my Google Analytics account and when three of my sites received penalty notices from Google Search Team it seems they decided to penalise my clients site to.

I don't believe my clients site was in breach of Google T & C but it looks like they decided to hit him to just for being associated with me. His business, as high profile photographer, which has been running for over 10 years just ground to a halt.

No my dear it is really a cool thing that you have to add in your website. It will help you to know the problems and inconveniences your website is currently facing and will help you to know the current standing of your website.

No its not as long as your not doing anything shady on your site like cloaking and so on. If you are doing that stuff and still want to use those tools create a different account for each site you own

I don't think so. Google has many useful free tools for SEO. It is good to use them to track your seo work.

I recognize the pros of using Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools to check backlinks, traffic patterns, etc. This was to focus on any potential con side.

And I'm not talking about a crappy site which has crap content and spam links coming to it, I'm mostly thinking of the decent sites out there which do play by the rules but according to Google Analytics, for example, aren't as good as their competitor's site's analytics.

This is basically what I expected in terms of responses, however. The field is split and a lot of conjecture out there.

I use it on my more "legit" sites. My only worry with it was they can measure bounce rate but I think they do this anyway by extracting data from their Chrome users. Just a hunch.

I personally dont use either. Not because I am afraid of getting caught for doing anything shady (i'm not) - it's more just because if i do ever get a penalty or whatever else bad my way, i dont want to be sat there thinking whether or not it would have made a difference if i hadnt added my sites to the tools.

The way i see it, webmaster tools doesnt really give me any useful info that i can't get elsewhere, and the same for analytics. So why choice it?

Both tools give great data, some people are afraid that they will give too much data that could harm their websites, but it's up to each individual to make their choice. IMO webmaster tools is "safer" then GA because it only get data that google already has anyway, but at least let you see that data. GA on the other side has access to way more data including bounce rate (even though they can already estimate that if a user go back in the serp...) and other metrics from direct traffic and other SE traffic...

GOOGLE KNOWS ALL!!! Just kidding. But on a serious note, who doesn't use Google to search for & research certain IM products. Google sees that & knows your IP address. If they already know that much about you anyway, why not get some analytics out of the deal?

Google have stated that search and analytics are completely separate. If they breached that trust then they really would be screwed.

I had a site that was ranked on page two of the serps for the main keyword, and it dropped out of the top 100 when I added it to google webmaster tools to submit a sitemap. Site is #4 on both bing and yahoo for the same keyword.

I'm sure it's just a coincidence, but I didn't do anything else so I'm left scratching my head.

I can't think of a single reason not to use Webmaster Tools or GA. As tools they may not set the world, but they on fire but the price is right.

The only thing that bothers me is people can track your sites by using your Google analytics ID, there are tools that will list all the sites associated with the ID..
