Question about domain name?

Hey Everyone,

Okay, I want to get a domain name for my website I'm putting together. The particular domain name I want is already being used "www.how-to-build-a-car.com". I have come up with some domain names that I think may work; www.how-to-build-a-car-now.com, www.how-to-build-a-car-fast.com, and www.howtobuildacarnow.com. What do you think about getting a domain name with the word "fast" or "now" at the end of it?

Question:

How important is it to have .com at the end of your domain name, if I have .org or .net will people still trust my site to click on it. Or is it absolutely vital to have .com at the end?

Thanks,

    Hi pj413!

    1) Yes I think you can still very much rank #1 for your desired keyword.
Your site Content is more important than your URL name.

If SEO is absolutely important to you over URL appearance,
then just remember that double hyphens can help you get rid of that extra word in your url,
    Example:
    www.how-to--build-a-car.com,

That is an acceptable URL format,
and it is no different from www.how-to-build-a-car.com, (SEO wise)

    2) .com is usually the first domain title people grab at,
I find .org possibly even more trustworthy than .com

It's just that if someone tries to type out your URL by memery,
they can very likely forget and put .com instead of .org.

I don't think these 2 factors should inhibit you from getting #1 rankings.

Your real task would be to get loads of links pointing to your site.

Once you can get that done, you're good to go!

    Good luck!

You might come across stiff competition as there are something like 40,000, 000 sites to compete with you keyword "how to build cars" (with the the quotations)and with quotes its only 9430 so you can in a sense compete but still the big guns are there..and most of the big boys are in the first page ; like Amazon and mostly pr 3, 4 and above so ... Good luck to you..

      Hi,

My answer for your question is listed below:

      1. Yes I think you can still very much rank #1 for your desired keyword.
Your site Content is more important than your URL name.

      I agree

      Example:
      www.how-to--build-a-car.com,

That is an acceptable URL format,
and it is no different from www.how-to-build-a-car.com, (SEO wise)

I suggest this domain www.how-to-build-a-car.com or no hyphen domain because once your returning visitor will comeback they can just easily remember your site.

      2) .com is usually the first domain title people grab at,
I find .org possibly even more trustworthy than .com

I suggest that .com because it is the most recognized and popular domain extension in the internet.

It's just that if someone tries to type out your URL by memery,
they can very likely forget and put .com instead of .org.

I agree But as I said most of the users will likely type .com first before .org

I don't think these 2 factors should inhibit you from getting #1 rankings.

Agree. Domain extensions has NO factors in ranking your website but it is beneficial when you choose popular tld.

Your real task would be to get loads of links pointing to your site.

Not really. When it comes to natural, you should not want yourself to get into trouble by getting LOADS of links pointing to your site. It might be good that you are EARNING links than BUILDING links.

      Regards,

      Ronnie

Ronnie, There is many factors in seo, to grab your site. so all attributes are very important for us, there is no any #1 rule to come in top 10 with one slot, follow latest strategy of google, and keep in touch.

I just used those names as an example, but the domain name that I want has the same concept.

    1. Yes, you can definitely rank for "how to build a car" if the domain is already taken.

    2. The domain extension at the end doesn't matter. You can rank high for whichever domain you choose considering your website has some good content relevant to the keywords "how to build a car." And also you need to make sure you develop quality backlinks as well.

Also, that is a very competitive niche, so you have your work cut out for you. Just stick with the brick and mortar SEO and see how far you get. Don't give up and be patient.

Maybe looking for a less saturated niche would be an idea if you are worried not to rank?

Just do proper backlinking about the keyword you want to use for your site. It sure gives you higher page ranking. I have also encounter the same problem recently, what I did is just post quality backlinks best optimizing the keyword. This might take a while, I have seen mine in the first page after, like, more than a month doing my job.

Yes you would need good backlinking with anchor text urls on pages that have relevant and / or related content to your site.

Please be aware that the domain has little or no affect on your ranking. Go search "book" or "books" and look at who ranks... Amazon... BN.com or Barnes and Nobles.... NYTimes... Powells.com..... a site called NCBI. Now other sites rank with the word "book" in the domain like books.google.com or abebooks.com, but that's not the reason they rank. To rank you need unique content, links links links, a good url structure, sitemap etc.
A good domain is good, but don't make it a huge priority.

Yes you can definitely rank here. First off the site with that domain that is already taken has no clout with google. It has no page rank and no backlinks.

The title of you page is not as significant as choosing phrases for your pages to rank for and then supporting those phrases by backing them up with lots of relevant content and updating your content on a regular basis.

Once you have chosen your terms and phrases (preferably long tail buyer phrases) that you
want to rank for and uploaded some good content its time to start creating backlinks. you need to write and submit articles to article directories that link back to your site. Do this daily and watch your site rank on google. Its simple and it works but it does take a little work.

Don't worry about competing with someone elses domain name, only beat them in quality content and backlinks and you'll do just fine.

The answer to the question would be yes, you can rank #1 with any domain.
But not much here is mentioned about the hard work to get it to #1
for a niche that is actually worth it. I know I could rank #1 for searches
for "how to catch squirrels while wearing nike air jordans," even going
as far as having that domain. But who would ever do a search for that?
Now how to build a car may make better sense, but how many people
are building cars? And doing searches? You may look for what kinds
of cars people are actually looking to build and take it from there.
build-your-car.com seems to be a shorter, better alternative and
    is available, it seems.

It is not the domain name that will stop you achieving a page 1 ranking. If you are using SEO then you need to make sure you build quality links to the site and offer your users quality content if you want a page 1 ranking.

.com or .net or .org makes no difference. Don't have to use dashes in your domains. Dash are not makes no difference and in fact people may type the wrong domain name if you add a dash there.

No #1 in Google means lots of backlink with our keywords in the link text and title. Google is pretty much an easy search engine to game. People think it is hard but it is not I have sites rank top 10 in Google,

#1 does not always mean good quality traffic... but no.10 does.

    anyway hopes that help

*I will not be using PPC, just all SEO*

    Thanks,
In essence, the answer to your question is yes. The domain name url is just one factor that Google considers when ranking a website. It is an important factor, yes, but it is not the main or only factor.

I have one keyword phrase that I competed for and I still rank #1 in Google for it.

I consistently beat the domain that had the specific keyword phrase in the domain name. I ranked higher than the site with the keywords in the domain for better than six months. Now the domain seems to be offline. I guess they did not like playing second fiddle - or in their case sixth fiddle.

Domain Plays very Important role in SEO. Matt Catt Google Spam head, Latest Update news regarding EMD domain, (Exact Match Domain) Which is known also Keyword Reach Domain name, Currently not getting more value as per SEO prospective, But basically i will suggest you to take keyword reach domain name but don't use so much high-fun, shorter domain better in seo, recognized such as brand name, so take this howtobuildacarnow
    Good Luck!!! Thanks

And there is no issue in using .org or .net domains. If your website contains a standard and appealing design containing good information, people do trust on these domains as well.
It's really good to listen, you can use exact match domain, which will be quite easy while targeting your audience, but please keep it short.

    Thanks,
After the EMD update Google start punishing the website with Exact keyword as domain name. so be careful while choosing your domain name.

as an example given googles EMD update you wouldnt want to go after any of those at all.
Find something you can brand, and build out into a multi-topic site, focussing on buildings cars in the example, there isnt any need to focus on a keyword in the domain, getting a good .com is always a benefit, but you can use something like buildaride.com
carbuilder or something brandable, so you can build an authority rather than a quick traffic snatcher.
