Hi everyone!

I am building my first ecommerce store & hoping that someone can explain the basics of keyword research to me. I know what my product line is, but I need to know what search phrases people are using to look for these products.

Thanks in advance everyone!

Follow these basic steps and you'll be better than 95% of internet marketers at doing keyword research:

    1. Do a search for a root word using the google adwords keyword tool. This will give you a good list of keyword phrases related to that word. Make sure you are in exact match mode so you know how many times each phrase is actually getting searched for each month.

    2. Put all of the keyword phrases with "intent to buy" into a spreadsheet. At this point you will have all the exact match keyword phrases in column A & all of the monthly searches in column B.

    3. Now in column C, you want to give each keyword phrase a weight. I usually use 1.0 as a HIGHEST intent to buy weight. Then .75 for medium intent to buy & .5 for related phrases that don't have much intent to buy. Column D should be the search phrase's "value" and it's simply column B multiplied by column C.

    4. Sort your list by VALUE (column D).

This will give you a list based on the value of each keyword phrase related to that product or line of products.

    Hope this helps!

      Dave nailed it.....

Only thing I would add is to look at adwords, both in number of ads and cost. Odds are, if a term does not convert, there will be few, none, or low bids for the term.

Also, you can make use of awstats to see which keywords people are using to find your site as you start to rank for various keywords. Any keywords that have intent-to-buy, can be incorporated in to your backlinking campaigns.
