To everyone out there who has had success with SEO for their website, what is the best way to get high quality backlinks to your site? As in, where are the best places to put your backlinks to improve your site's search engine ranking?

Related sites index pages with a PR value. Article marketing might help but your article needs to have a PR value for it to hold any real weight in helping it. There are a ton of places to get backlinks but you really need to watch its not really about getting 20,000 backlinks its about getting 100 with a good PR ranking, solid keyword and on a related website.

    Thanks Sean.

So essentially what you are saying is it's important to not just have a lot of backlinks, but to have them on well ranked sites?

Dont go for quantity always try to get link from authority website which can helps you in long-term. You can try guest blogging and according to me it is one of the best way to get contextual link on high pr blog.

For high quality backlinks you have need to do forum posting and blog commenting are better way for it because both are better for quality backlinks and al;so you can drive relevant traffic to your site from other sites.

I agree with the above points about quality over quantity but it is not about just finding sites that rank high for some keywords or that have high PR (we all know that PR is a much overrated figure). High quality link building is about real credible links from a variety of related sources which are created in a natural manner.

It is not much good getting all these great backlinks if they are all added in the same week, while several other weeks go past without a link being placed. The search engines aren't stupid.

Link velocity is important here, this means a natural growth of building links to a website without spamming them all at once.

Diversity is another point, don't go out and create links all with the same or similar anchor text. You need to switch it up and again this helps in allowing the search engines to see your websites link portfolio grow naturally.

There are many other points I could make on the topic but you really need to keep testing each method and remember that your backlinking efforts today only effect rankings over 30 days from now in most cases. This means tracking the results and proving theories can become a confusing procedure.

Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks for the information. Seems like you know a lot about SEO. So search engines only "factor in" links created today about a month from now?

And does anyone know what the best online directories (preferably free ones) are for submitting sites to?

    • Hi. Here are some things we usually formulate and implement for the online traffic and sales generation campaigns of our clients:

Find a well-aged expired closeout domain. Domain should have a domain name containing a good exact match keyword. Domain should have active backlinks anchored by good, contextually relevant exact and phrase match keywords. Domain homepage should have high Google PR, for resale purposes in case you're planning to sell for profits the site you'll be developing under the domain...

Content syndication in heavily trafficked, contextually relevant authority sites. Contact owners of these sites and blogs and offer them content that can provide their regular viewers with benefits not found elsewhere, except on your site where the content should already be published, in exchange for banner and text links pointing to your site and pages with effective supplemental content. You can also ask if they can send your content with banner and text links to their mailing list subscribers. A few will only accept content not published elsewhere, so you should determine the benefits you can gain from developing unique content and posting it on their sites, without a copy first posted on yours...

Develop a useful product, a guide/tutorial/video course/software. Develop a sales page for the product and post it on your site. Integrate the payment process with your mailing list subscription script. Post the product as an affiliate product in various affiliate networks, such as JVZoo, with a 90% or more commission percentage per sale. Use free Adwords, Yahoo! and Facebook PPC credits to promote your site, product and affiliate signup page. This way, others will be finding heavily trafficked sites by your target market to promote your site, product and affiliate signup page...

      Hope this helps...

Basically, we can all thank spammers for the hard work and effort webmasters have to spend towards SEO. I know it's a pain with a lot of uncertainty but just keep adding fresh content and getting backlinks. Also, go you need a good mixture of no and dofollow backlinks. How would in look in Google's eyes if you only had Dofollow backlinks? It would look unnatural.

Getting good PR links are more valuable than bulk submissions and automated services. The more efforts you put in manually the better results you get. Choose proper sources and plan it well. I am sure it will produce results.

It's a combination of where and what you need to be focused on. It is always going to be about delivering the best quality beneficial information that you can with a hint that you have more to offer. And as for where you should be distributing your content. I would have to suggest news, government or authority document sharing sites as they have shown me that they withhold the test of time. Thus far.

    The most effective link building strategies available today are;

    1. Writing original and high quality articles and then submitting to ezinearticles.com or any other article directories
    2. Find niche-specific blogs and make relevant and insightful comments
    3. Sign up to various forums and contribute by making useful and captivating comments
    4. Writing articles and submitting to popular social networks
    5. Social bookmarking with sites such as del.ici.ous
