Image Alt Text vs Anchor Text Link?

Hey everyone,

In regards to internal linking, will an image link weigh the same as a text link, if the alt text and anchor text is the same?

Example:

Image link alt text: DVD Rentals

anchor text link: DVD Rentals

I would like to have some image links on my website, but I don't want to lower my on page optimization in the eyes of Google.

Also, Is the result the same if the links are external?

Thank you

Are you trying to build links directly to the image?

Are you trying to rank the images?

    This thread might help?

      Thanks Yukon,

I'm trying to replace some text links on my page with images that link to a page.

I'm not trying to rank the images but I will have my keyword in the Alt text of the image.

If I have two links on my static homepage, the first link is an image with the alt text "DVD Rentals", the second link is a text link and the anchor text is "DVD Rentals"

They will both link to the same page on my website.

Does Google see the text link as a 'stronger' link than the image link?

      Thank you.

I prefer a text link when possible.

If you look at a Google Cache (text version) you'll see that Google will create anchor-text from the image ALT-tag text, so they do see the text. Still, I would make sure to get regular anchor-text on your pages.

According to me text link would be more beneficial in interlinking, Text link can pass link juice to inner page while image link can't.

      Thanks for the response Stuart,

I have been reading many different opinions on the subject, most contradicting each other... :/ I'm not questioning your expertise, but is that is your opinion?

I can't seem to find anything relating to how Google spiders analyze the internal links?

No, text anchor will work better than image anchor but it is important to use anchor variation. So use both.

Image Alt text are important but the most important part in case of link building is anchor text. i have never worked with image optimization but i always use image alt tag.

Generally search engine can not read your image so that is why image alt tag required where anchor text helps to get good ranking over the search engine for that particular linking keyword.

The alt text you use for your images helps your images to rank well in Google Image search. The text you use as anchor text with your pages hyperlinked helps your pages to rank well in Google web search.
