Why do my niche sites disappear from SERPs at times?

So I have a site that is 2 years old and has unique content and after building some backlinks to it it went missing from SERPs for like a 1.5 months and recently popped back on the 1st page again (where it was before it disappeared).

Now another 2 of my sites are missing again. These were steadily climbing up the SERPs for their main keyword and then all of sudden they are gone for that specific keyword I was building backlinks for. The sites are indexed and all and they are ranking for other terms, but for the main keyword that I used as anchor text to build backlinks for the site is no where in the SERPs.

What causes these sites to go missing from the SERPs at times? And I know sites will shift and move around and come back, but usually that is only like a few days or a week, but I've noticed my sites to go missing for like over month or 2 at times.

Any insight on what exactly causes this to happen?

    It happens because you're building too many low quality links, too fast and for too few keyword variations.

    My rule of thumb is to set 50% of the link building to target keywords, 25% using the url itself as anchor text aka naked backlink (surrounded by relevant text), and 25% using long tail variations of the target keywords in addition to generic words like click here, read more, visit etc.

      Well the links are from BMR which are high PR blog posts and it's submitting 1-3 links a day. But what my issue might be is using the same anchor text at a high percentage. Might have to lower the percentage like you have suggested and see what happens.

    retsek is has a good point. Using the same anchor text will not bring good results for your keyword targeting campaign. I've experience that before. So to give you an idea, I usually add prefixes or suffixes to mix my keywords. For example, if I'm using a keyword "online casino", I would make it "best online casino" or "online casino review website".

    In that way, you will avoid too much focus on the main keyword. Another thing, you have also a good chance to rank for other keywords (like in my example, in the keyword online casino review website, you are able to target multiple keywords at the same time - online casino, casino website, and casino review).

    I also agree with other posters. Vary your anchor text. I have been also experiencing same problem with one of my page that has not varied anchor text backlinks.

      Did your site come back after you started varying your anchor text for the backlinks you did for the next few weeks after your site disappeared?

        In fact two pages were affected. They did not disappear instead dropped in ranking. Yes, after i started varying anchor text they both are now back to normal position.

          What sort of variation percentage did you do to fix the issue? Let's say your for example the keyword was "dog training tips" and that page dropped dropped in the SERPs for using the same anchor text.

          So like for your next 100 backlinks what percentage of those anchor text would be "dog training tips" and what percentage other related keywords? If you can answer my question using the example of the keyword "dog training tips" to what you did for your keywords?

    Remember too, BMR links are only high PR when they are on that first page and often diluted by the many links. So they are not that high of "quality" as you would think.

    You're going about anchor text all wrong. The reason why you are dissapearing off the first page is because Gdogg is detecting unnatural links. retsek has some good advice by telling you to use words like "here" or "click here" as an anchor text, but I would say that at least 1/3 of your anchors should be those.

    Gdogg doesn't look at just the text of the link, it also looks at all the words in proximity to the link to extract relevancy. If you use your keywords in a sentence, and then say "for more info click here" it will be just as powerful and will look much more natural to Gdogg.

      So for the new BMR posts should I use like a small percentage of them as the main anchor text now so that my site comes back again...say 50% of the keyword I want to rank and the other 50% a mixture of adding suffixes, prefixes, or click here, url, etc.? Will that help with getting my site back and ranking?

    I think this thing occurs due to Google Panda 3.3. Now, Google more conscious about content and backlinks that's why this thing happened with your website

    Few of the reasons which i could think of are

    - Google panda 3.3 update
    - Google dance
    - Some structural changes in your site
    - Malware on your website (kind of hacking , less chance)

    I would say "fluctuation in ranking". It is mainly due to low quality links and the site is lacking authority site's links, so at the starting you should build links some authority sites including .edu, .gov etc.

    Until my site/page is back i shall not create any backlinks for "dog training tips"

    You should use other related keywords in anchor text like

    exact url
    puppy training tips
    dog training advice
    dog training
    puppy training
    tips on dog training
    tips for dog training
    dog training techniques
    dog obedience training
    dog obedience training tips
    how to train a puppy
    how to train a dog
