140,000 backlinks in one month???

I was analyzing my competition on majesticseo and last year one of my competitors went from 0 backlinks to 140,000 in a month, non-cumulative. Yet they are ranked in the top 3 for many terms.

They've since dropped to around 10,000 new backlinks per month.

Does this mean that you can create all the backlinks you want without penalty from google, because there is no way that is natural.

    Some people will say it's unnatural, others will say it doesn't matter. I've experienced both where sometimes I saw success even with a sudden blast of links to a new site and other times I experienced total failure.

    What I learned?
    Don't waste time trying to understand Google's algorithms.

    Exactly the same problem as me. I've been researching keywords and in a huge number of cases, the top spots have spammy backlinks yet they have remained in these positions for months. As my aim is to create lots of good quality websites, I don't have time to wait months and months for Google to realise these backlinks are spammy as my aim (like everyone else) is to get to no. 1.

    140,000 backlinks per month and ranking in top 3? this sounds unrealistic to me.

    Something on their site may have become very popular and caused lots of people to link to it. Happens all the time.

    I will tell you what is not natural. Building 20 links a day, every day. That is not natural.

      140,000 backlinks from nothing? 140,000 views if it went viral, but there is no way you jump to 140,000 backlinks from nothing. To get 140,000 backlinks, you'd have to have a million+ visitors to get that naturally. By the way, this is not the type of site or content that would go viral. It is educational reference material.

        140,000 views is a drop in the bucket.

        I was just making a point that people see a large number of links and just assume it was not natural. It very well can be.

        I would take a look at the TYPE of links to determine that. If it is mostly blog comments and forum profile links, then yes, it was not natural.

        I was also pointing out that people think by building a small number of links every single day that it somehow looks more "natural". I find that ridiculous.

    140,000 backlinks in a month, may or may not get the site penalized. But as you said it was from 1 year ago, even if the site was penalized, the penalty period has expired by now. After the penalty period is expired, those backlinks still will count and will boost SERP just like normal backlinks do.
