Partial Duplicate Content on 2 different pages - same site

Hi all,

Just a quick question on duplicate content. I have a website that focuses on various products. What I normally do it describe each product and place an affiliate link within the post. Each page on my website does this for about 5 products on average. What I am finding is that some products would be good to have on 2 different pages within my site. Would it be better if I re-wrote my entire description over, or would it be ok to have the same description (100 words) within two different pages mixed in with non-matching other product content?

Hope that makes sense!

    Hey there,

Since no ones replied yet I'll help you out.

This is a common problem that almost any large ecommerce site faces. It makes sense to have items listed in multiple categories, but doing so can cause duplicate content issues if you are not careful.

Luckily for you, the search engines recognize that this is a common issue have created what's known as the rel canonical tag. It's a bit too much to cover in this post, but SEOmoz has a pretty good post about it here: Canonicalization - SEO Best Practices | SEOmoz

Once you implement the rel canonical tag on all of your duplicate pages you'll be able to have as much duplicate content as you want with no worry.

Thank you that helps a lot. Going to read the link you provided as well, appreciate it. Perhaps it says it in the link, but when adding canonical tag, does that mean you are excluding some of your pages from possible serp placement?

      Thanks!

From what it sounds like, you shouldn't have any issues with that.
